Why are some plain used Rolex Submariners selling for $10,000+ even with scratches?

...

i don't even know what that is

Girard perregaux 32a, one of (I believe) 662 observatory certified pieces from 1966-1967. The first 36000vph wristwatch (perhaps first 36000vph timepiece, not sure). Like all cal 32a pieces, guaranteed to 1 minute per month, matching the accuracy of the recently released accutron.

why not just get a quartz?

Some original advertising materials from the period

Have you found a good watchmaker to service it yet user?

Because historical advancement in watch technology is an interest of mine? And I have.

I'm thinking I might fly up to Toronto for a weekend some time next month - I've never been - and drop off both that and my non observatory hf with a watchmaker there. I got in touch with him and he said he would do it but is on vacation right now.

Do they have mail in canada? or runways?

Yes? But they also have customs which is enough of a pain to make a plan of making a visit to a new city seem like a good one. Plus I might finally be able to get my hands on a prismatic.

sending a watch in the mail to canada is more trouble than buying a plane ticket and flying there?

WOW

It certainly is likely cheaper than sending 5-6k worth of watches with insurance and customs fees, yes.

>It certainly is likely cheaper than sending 5-6k worth of watches with insurance and customs fees, yes.
WHAT THE FUCK CANADA

God damn leafs

Fangirls just love taking rolex dick up their ass. Also some models are known for going up in price, so people flip them for some profit.

It really isn't. t. leaf

Let me know when you're coming up, maybe I'll drop by said watchmakers' place while your there or something like that and being the Presmatic. Mind bringing the 45KS so I can see it up close?

That machining.

Yeah I can do that. Let me know if there's anything else in my collection you'd like to see.

...

Why do I lose 5 minutes or so a week in my seiko 5?
I wear it all day

Probably because you bought a Seiko 5.

But I was told by anons that this was the watch to get for a semi poorfag

...

are you sure it's wound? shake it around for a few minutes to ensure it actually is

should have bought a vostok, buddy

I did look into vostok and decided to get this instead
Maybe my next watch will actually keep time

Just picked this up. Thoughts?

They are, but don't expect high accuracy.

Losing 5 minutes per week is out of spec I believe (-20/+40 spd). You may be able to return and get a better example.

That said, it does sound like something is wrong with yours, perhaps return it for another.

I don't know if that's normal for a Seiko 5
if not I'm sure this is covered under warranty

If the time loss is consistent and you care to try it, opening up a Seiko 5 and regulating it is fairly simple.

I just got a SARB035 (from the deal another user posted last week). Now to find a fitting strap for it - it's currently on a gray eulit perlon, which is fine for daily wear, but I'd like something a little nicer.
I'm looking at those cheap vietnamese alligator straps, does anyone have experience with those?

Also, black or brown leather for the sarb035?

Well guys, I'm back. Quick recap: I bought the Seagull 1963 acrylic from watchunique in the Netherlands, and it arrived this past Tuesday. Everything was fine, except the chrono central seconds hand which would stutter but not lose time. The plan was to take it to a watchmaker today.

I just got back, and everything is running fine. An user had mentioned a likely diagnosis; that the chrono wheel needed adjustment, and sure enough, this was the case and it was adjusted easily and quickly. My guy put the watch on the machine to check the rate, and everything was 0 point something, regardless of position, to the point where he exclaimed, 'Holy shit...". Needless to say, I was more than relieved...I was over the moon.

Now, a few things you guys need to know about this particular watch. cont.

>Probably cant even afford a seiko 5
>feels the need to shit on others
Jealousy is not good for you, my friend.

Soyko movements are solid workhorses. Yours might just be defective. If you have warranty, return it. Otherwise get it serviced. Ask what it will cost first. I think the cheaper alternative is to replace the whole movement by yourself. Swapping watch hands is easy.
look up some vid tutorials on YT. You dont need special tools, i used razor blades to pry the hands off.
Make sure to remove all the dust from the case and use gloves to avoid smudges.

You're wrong, keep reading the thread dumbass.

Do you wear black or brown shoes

what the fuck is this post

cont.

The watch uses the Venus 175; the Chinese govt. purchased the tooling to create the movement back in the 60's, in order to create their own watch for their pilots. So, it's a Venus, but obviously with Chinese modifications to it over the years in terms of manufacture. The base movement is solid and reliable; the question for anyone buying one now is if it's put together with good tolerances, and how it's put together when fitted into the case.

My watch right now at least gives me some indication of both. Only Ed in HK regulates the watches he gets in from Tiangin before sending them out to customers; my understanding with watchunique is that they simply receive the watches and send them out without inspection.

If you're going to buy one, even though they're cheap, try to budget a trip to a local watchmaker to have it checked out when you get it. It's definitely worth it, even for peace of mind. For a 300$ chronograph, an extra 30 bucks max is well within reason as opposed to sending it back, paying for postage and taxes, etc.

cont.

>keep reading the thread so you can see that im not actually poor

Yeah, naw, fuck off, m8.

It tells an user to try and service his own watch instead of crying and running to mommy, like you would. :^)

>I'm a fucking retard so now I'll just post memes

Fucking gross desu. What is up with the date location?

I don't wear dress shoes.

Might be cool if any of that was legible from more than 5 inches away.

Sounds like you got lucky on the accuracy, that's nice. How much did the adjustment cost you?

>posts memes himself

You are playing yourself, user. Dont try to win this, bitchboi.

The 90's want their comebacks back.
There's nothing to win, you fucked yourself with your first post.

>should have bought a vostok, buddy
And that would have helped how exactly? Vostok movements are in the +/- 30-60 seconds a day range where the 7s26 is rated for -15/+25 s/d.

If his is losing 5 minutes a week it is running out of spec and should be exchanged after being demagnetized to rule out it being a simple fix.

I bought it last August

Should still be under warrantee if you bought it new.

cont.

There is a lever in the mechanism (I think it's the one that starts the chronograph, the one that stretches around the movement that is coupled with the start/stop button) that is not secured into the movement if the back of the watch is removed; this will pop out if you try to engage the chrono by pushing the button, and it's a delicate process to get back in (you have to remove a few screws, etc.). My watchmaker couldn't understand why anyone would do this, as in his experience the original Venus 175 had something to prevent this from happening. In the Seagull, it's pretty clear that the back of the casing prevents this from happening, which means that you can't engage the chrono if the movement is out of the case...a pain, and something you should all know about.

So, the final verdict? This watch is fucking awesome. For the aesthetics, the complication, and the price, this is far better than anything on the market. But, and I want to impress this on you all. MAKE SURE you budget in a trip to a local watchmaker when you get one. It'll give you peace of mind, and it shouldn't cost too much.

I'm telling you all this because I wish I had known these things, even before purchase. I'd probably still get it, but it's nice to know. Thanks again to you all for your thoughts and enthusiasm...if it weren't for this place, I wouldn't even know that this watch existed.

Now I have to start thinking about 18mm strap options..

Yes; but it does tally with many reports I've seen. The thing is, Tiangin makes all the movements in one factory, in one place. Then they ship the complete movement off to suppliers to deal with the different cases, modifications, etc. So, you would expect some level of precision and accuracy over the general product. When Ed in HK gets his movements, at one point he said that he had to regulate about 2 or 3 out of 20/30, so for him the quality control was reasonable. cont.

Nice.
Except those are in gold, so they'll dull and scratch just from rubbing your sleeve over it.

vostok is much better value for money than a seiko 5, and he can handwind it to ensure that underwinding isnt the cause of the problem

can your watch go 200 meters deep?

>There's nothing to win
Yet you try very hard to.
>he stopped posting memes after i told him
Wow, very submessive, but i am not surprised.

I did
I'll check with the warranty thanks non Faggot anons
Fuck you Faggot user, you know who you are

My guy charged me 20$ for the whole thing; given that the adjustment of the chrono was the only thing that had to be done, then it was no problem. He was gently griping about the chrono lever issue, but that's clearly an issue with the Chinese design; a way of cutting corners, probably.

But then again, I visited him in person, watched how he worked, chatted with him, etc. A personal touch changes the cost sometimes, so perhaps his charge was more reasonable than it would have been had I simply mailed it to him. I live in the same city, so it's easy (though it was admittedly a long drive due to shitty traffic).

Replying is now trying very hard, got it.
There is no need to meme every post, this is a fucking watch thread after all.

Depending on whom you mean, you're welcome, and I'm only half faggot.

Yeah, not too bothered. First few scratches are the most noticeable, then they kind of blend in. it's meant to be worn

That's interesting, I have a watch with an ST19 in the mail at the moment so I'm happy to learn about that. It does seem like a very weird choice.

>20$
Nice. The experience seems totally worth it too.
I'm going to have to find a local watchmaker at some point, my first mechanical watch is now running like shit so I'd love to have someone take a look at it. Unfortunately I don't know of any in the relatively small city I live in, so I'm going to have to do some digging.

Thanks fucker, I had recently convinced myself I didn't need a Datejust.

>user buys a white gold datejust
huh.

>vostok is much better value for money than a seiko 5

Is this heirloom-tier?

I sure would like to inherit one, so, sure.

if you want whoever owns it next to have huge maintenance and service costs from the hi-beat movement

Maybe. When thinking of an heirloom, I tend to imagine simpler designs. The same watch without a GMT hand and sub-second markings would absolutely qualify, to my eyes.

Admittedly, I'm lucky. I live in a very large city, so even for something like mechanical watches, it's not too difficult to find someone. The problem and stress for me was that I don't have a 'normal' guy that I go to; when I sent the Seamaster off for servicing, I did it at one the of Omega boutiques because it was old enough to warrant a serious look. It came back 'like new', so now it's relegated to 'special wear', because the servicing costs are almost to the moon.

Finding someone you can trust is very difficult, but this guy had nearly unanimous good reviews from people on the forums who live in my city. They all praised him for the same things; his knowledge, his friendliness, and his reasonable and realistic cost (he basically runs a mom+pop watch repair out of his apartment). Since I knew he had experience with these watches, at least he wouldn't give me the expected 'wagging of the finger' for buying a Chinese watch. It's not like you can take these things to normal watchstores...they'll laugh at you because you haven't bought Swiss. But he's awesome, so I have a watch guy now in case of anything.

I'm sure there must be some kind of 'watch guild' or 'watchmaker's association' or something you can look up for your country, to find people who are certified. That's a good way to start. But I'm just guessing here...I'm sure you'll have a better idea of where to start looking, even if it's just at the biggest mall in your city or something.

Also, my excitement about this watch is simply because it's my first ever mechanical chronograph, and it's also my first mechanical hand-wound movement. I used to ignore or write-off handwound movements, because from my point of view, what was the point in paying so much money if you had to wind it yourself. There's a very small part of me that still feels that way...but the more I get to know this watch, the more I enjoy winding it. That's also what people kept on telling me, and I believe it now.

Sorry bro. The DJII didn't do much for me but when they released the DJ41 with Jubilee that was it. Wears really well as an everyday too surprisingly, goes with everything.

Only the bezel is white gold.

I'm torn. I want to like the Frogman, but not sure if it looks silly large on my wrist. I have a 7.5" wrist but because of the strap design of the Frogman, it doesn't hug the wrist as well as some of the more recently designed G-shocks.

What does G think?

I got lot of that shit when i was asking about a service for my amphibia.
Glad that you know a watchmaker that is not a cunt.

At least in the us the nawcc is such a place

The Hi-beats are recommended for service every 3 years right?

Do the regular-beat Grand Seikos have longer service intervals?

The manual will state 3 years for both. That's a very conservative service interval though.

The poorfag gods blessed me with finding this beauty in a mall for 40€.
Its a good hommage if you only care about the fluted bezel and the jubilee bracelet. I also like that its rather small uinstead of that modern rolex, xbox huge retardation.
The date is about to change, so it is not centered, its not always off center.
Its hard to find fluted bezels today. I was even considering replicas.

Also, that is not hand aids, my phone just got some shit on the lense, i will take it apart and clean soon.

It doesn't look too large imo desu

>What does G think?

Either you like it or not, dont let others decide for you. You will mostly get salt when you do that.

I just purchased a Junkers 6046-5 Bauhaus. What are peoples thoughts on these watches?

Good find. The only thing that bothers me is the polished rehaut. Why do they do this?

Ruined by the off-centre strap

Not a big fan, but by all accounts they're not bad watches.

I'm not asking G to tell me whether I should like the watch. I'm asking about opinions regarding the size, especially the protrusion of the strap away from the wrist.

thanks though

Do you have any arguments against this watch?

Well i was originally looking at a Junghans Max Bill but i couldn't afford it (uni student) and these ones were recommended as a Junghans "rip off" and i did like the look. Quality wise though they're decent?

Put it on a stretchy bracelet and you will love it even more. I got mine a few years ago and got bored with it. Getting the new band for it made me fall in love again. The leatherstrap does not make it loik as good as it could.

The domed glass will get little scratches easily, but you. will stop caring after a while. Otherwise they are fine, the eta movement is going strong.

They added this little triange over the 12, odd, mine is an older version without one. I got it for 399€, newer versions went up in price slghtly.

Really not a fan of metal straps/bracelets sorry, i really like the plain look of the dark brown leather.

This is my first watch ever (im 25) is there any tips you can give me on general upkeep/do's and don'ts etc

That bracelet looks terrible.

Thank you, it was pure luck.
>polished rehaut
I think its just cheaper to make them that way.

Ah ok, i see. Well it seems to suit your wrist, i cant see anything odd. Its not too big also.

>he basically runs a mom+pop watch repair out of his apartment
Do you live in Southern Ontario by any chance?

Understood. I like the beige dial on that, i think that now i would also go for beige instead of black.
>general upkeep/do's and don'ts
watches dont like vibrations. Dont wear it while usinb a hammer, for example, or playing tennis etc. I heard that the eta 2824-2 can have issues if you handwind it a lot, but i think its not true. Still i wind it mostly via the rotor after i kickstart it with the handwinder.
Also read about setting the date on your watch during specific times. Some movements dont like when you set the date when its past 6. Not sure about the eta tho, i didnt care to read about it, i just dont set the date after 6.

its my phone camera. It really shines nicely irl. But it was only 12euros, i was not sure if i will like it, so i tried the cheaper version first. Not updating tho. ill keep it.

This is my watch

>This is my watch

Okay thanks for that dude I appreciate the advice. I'm looking forward to getting it, a nice watch really accentuates everything else you wear imo and it looks pretty alpha if you do it correctly.

>pretty alpha if you do it correctly
to be perfectly honest with you, no. People usually dont notice your watch. You will be better looking with a well fitted shirt, pants and shoes that go with it.
If a girl likes you, she will compliment every watch you wear. They dont know shit about anything so dont try to impress them.
You are better off working out. A good body will raise more attention than some watch and the rest is not being an insecure faggot and talking to them. Keep practicing, it can be a hard, long yourney.

>yourney

Love that oldschool watchband, modern ones are rather unoriginal. Its thin but comfy.

Whats with this model lately? Is it some kind of new meme, seeing it often. Was like 6 months away from watch threads.
