Actually they were a very interesting guitar pop band and they couldn't have rode the coattails of any band considering they weren't really successful and were only remembered fondly in retrospect.

slowdive were flavor of the month, if you watched the documentary you'll notice their early eps were praised then were panned. they should have just been forgotten like most buzzbands but instead they were immortalized as some cult classic band for some reason.

but it had a happy ending; the doc basically showed how their music has aged really well and is strongly established now, whereas nobody gives a shit about Britpop anymore. they win in the end.
