I have been to one of these churches in Czech. They were victims of the plague an stuffed inside the church because the cemetery outside was full. Is this an old catholic thing?
My thoughts exactly
DESIGNATED
FAPPING
STREETS
...
The bones in OP pics belonged to Capuchin Friers, it is a memento mori , I guess
calm down, Abdelatif, I know this is haram for you,
btw, how was your sacrifice day?
Palermo? The one with 8000 skeletons and 1200 mummies?
Now i get it. Thanks.
I don't know the English name for it. It's also in art.
Hey fellow pagans. Why so morbid with all them sculls? Can't you be like us and be the cheery type of pagans?
See pic! Spread the cheer!
I guess each Catholic country has at least one of them. Spoopy stuff.
That's actually pretty cute
Another one - this time from the Czech Republic
this thread
Fantastic
>Is this an old catholic thing?
Yep, "memento mori"
There was also that great theme, Danse Macabre - all people, regardless their social status, are mortal
>tfw animation was better in fucking 1929 than it is today
>regardless
regardless of
This thread is too spoopy for me.
Ah yes the Danse Macabre from Saint Saens.
youtube.com
Pretty interesting thought now i read about it. It's not about being spooky. And how could i not knew this, it's everywhere in art and music. I'm a cultural moron.
contro morbo crudel
ragion non vale
nemmeno l'eccelsa
dignità papale
Catholic Heretics, you'll burn
>I'm a cultural moron
Why? Just stop, I didn't know this composition by Saint-Saens, I simply treat European culture as some kind of treasury - there is always some great stuff one can discover.
>old ladies go to church to pray to these bones
>they were all rapists and criminals
Really makes you think.
Bigoted Catholic heresy
It's actually quite fascinating that some Italian or French themes were implemented in such distant regions as todays Latvia or Estonia.
don't you have some new compatriots to welcome?
end your life my man
Catholics are far more interesting. If i go to a basilica i see sculptures, paintings and a shitload of local history. And if i go to a protestant church am staring at a blank wall. Oh, and they are only open on Sunday where some old people sing songs to a blank wall.
Catholic Germany is best Germany.
I'd say it's only good Germany.
>Protestants talking about heresy
isto
2bh I kinda respect Spanish Catholicism, but you guys are just meme Catholics.
Why not praying to the sculptures and worship them?
Catholics are far away from being real Christians. "Saints" are de facto demigods.
>
I'm curious - do contemporary Italians understand the language of Divina Commedia?
It's called the same in English, memento mori.
Come back when you have at least a dozen skulls.
>I kinda respect Spanish Catholicism
>posting Pr*ssia
I guess you would feel great as a member of some Mongolian horde - no thinking, one chieftain ordering you what to do
Catholic pride world wide :D
It's quite hard, there are too many archaic words, and the sentences are written in a poetical way doesn't help. The Decameron is much easier to read for instance, despite haveing been written 30-50 years later.
Grazie, l'anono
...
Italian Gothic is really unique - much less gloomy than in other countries
I don't think we have any bone church but we have the catacombs of Paris
>"Saints" are de facto demigods.
I am an atheist but this why I prefer Catholicism. Protestantism is Christianity sterilized of its irrational impulses and culture to make it compatible with the modern world. The thought behind it is reasonable and Martin Luther's story is genuinely inspiring, but Protestantism often results in sects that lack the rigor and beauty of Catholicism's ritual and history. This is especially pronounced in my country, where you can compare Catholic cathedrals to evangelist megachurches and other eyesores.
The icons, patron saints, grandeur and popery help accentuate the mystical atmosphere of Christianity and thus its power. In its simplicity and accessibility, Protestantism opens the door for mediocrity

l'butthurt
who placed all these skulls and bones there
why did they do it
where did they get them from?
The cemeteries were full and contaminating the water. If i remember correctly. There is such thing as Google. You should try it.
You don't understand those therms you are using - demigods possess some kind of superhuman power, Catholic saints are normal people, just like you or your Turkish neighbour, the same with Catholic paintings or sculptures, they don't "answer" any prayers.
...
The cemetaries were so full sometimes corpses bursted through walls into houses, the smell was everywhere, it was polluting water, breeding diseases etc
So they put all the bodies (about 6 millions) in former mine tunnels under the city, sometimes just throwing the bones away and sometimes making walls and patterns with them
The part people can visit is 1.7km long, but there are actually more than 300km of tunnels under Paris, more or less maped
>there are actually more than 300km of tunnels under Paris
fantastic
It's illegal to venture there but a lot of people do it, some weird shit happens here sometimes. There have been illegal cinemas, nightclub, even restaurants down there. And also the occasional spooky murder, sect, and ghost story
After Wikipedia for hours i really wish that there were more documentaries about this stuff. I have seen a lot of it in museums and churches all over Europe but i have no idea about the context what i have seen. I remember being in Venice looking at famous renaissance art and some old guy told me that the term "renaissance" was basically a term an Italian named Giorgio Vasari wrote down in his book in that time, and that the "renaissance" happened all over Europe at the same time like a meme. It was not bound to Italian art. You can find it all over Europe in statues and paintings.
Oh shit it's 2:30 again. Fuck you internet.
Fuck you.
Pagans were all disgusting savages, that's why people were so happy to convert and paganism died. "pagans" now are just larpers.
Zomfg ive been there too
We keep a ton of our pagan customs. I know that your country is young and you lack on culture and history but here on the old continent we have plenty of both.
rad
OK, but my point was that there is no reason to be so self-critical. If you do some research on your own you are already among not so numerous people who care about this stuff. Also - you will never know all great painters, composers etc. Let's say - Dutch composers - without googling I only remember Jacob van Eyck, but still I know more than 90% people in my country. Actually I would be surprised if many Poles knew about Karol Szymanowski:
youtube.com
and I don't blame them - ten years ago I didn't know any of his compositions.
I find this protestant bashing on Sup Forums a bit bothersome sometimes. I am just a simple protestant guy who believes in God as creator and supreme lawgiver. I do not believe a saint can plead for me, I honour Mary but she should not be made so godly as she is made by catholics. But that is what I think. Most of Sup Forums catholic memesters I think are atheists that like the charm of the Roman church. They refuse to see trinitarian Protestants as their brothers, not because they are catholic, but because they do not even believe.
My church might look cold. My love for God is not.
Yeah but if you post Danse Macabre and some Italian Post Memento Mori and i never connected the dots. And it stuffed my stupid face into Dutch paintings with skulls, clocks and empty glasses. That's barbaric lol
>but because they do not even believe.
Bingo!
That wasn't so hard wasn't it?
I am a devout Catholic (currently in pre-postulancy with the aspiration of becoming a Dominican friar, in fact) and I have no reservations in saying that I do not think highly of Protestants in the least. I do not view them as brothers, because they are not my brothers. That is the truth, and I say that with all respect and charity.
I guess it's only meming, also - aside from memes - both sides can be really hardcore, I know some hardcore anti-Protestant Catholics, but also many anti-Catholic Protestants, it's actually quite funny when you think about all real problems the West has today
Hmm... but don't you think that declarative Catholics who, let's say, suport abortion are worse than some decent Protestant guy from Ohio?
>suport
support
You have your opinion. I do think your popes have been quite accepting towards protestants and wise in not giving the same recognition to non-trinitarians. I see you as a brother that believes in Christ as his saviour. If you do not think the same then I cannot change that. Good luck in your studies, I have always admired the devotion of catholic clergy.
>That's barbaric lol
It could be worse, user
youtube.com
Neither is better nor worse by virtue of the fact that abortion and material and formal heresy/schism are all mortal sins. All three incur excommunication latae sententiae (presuming one has procured an abortion rather than supporting abortion) in accordance with the Code of Canon Law, such is their gravity.
At least here where I live, it's mostly the Evangelicals being fanaticals and bashing the Catholics at every opportunity they have(most if my father's family side), while the Catholics are pretty chill and wouldn't mind going to an evangelical temple.
I'm catholic and outside some memeing here and there I really don't mind protestants as long as we respect each other.
>those signs
Spooky
The only thing that prevents us from being brothers in the true and full sense is the obstinacy with which the Protestant rejects the Bride of Christ and her doctrines. This is to say that the Catholic who is obliged to use some term like cousin rather than brother in reference to Protestants, Eastern Orthodox, or other Christians who are not in communion with Rome, is not in this instance the divisive party. I do love you for God's sake, but I cannot call you brother until such time as your heart softens.
How did they put all those skelly together? Did they jut put it right after the person's death or till all the soft tissue worn out?
>imagine the stench
>We bones that are here for yours await.
Often times, as in the Capela dos Ossos in Evora, they would exhume the long-buried skeletal remains of the consecrated religious and laid the bones much as one would with bricks and mortar.
OK, I agree that the doctrine shouldn't be watered down. BTW, I guess, you weren't meming about that pre-postulancy, you sound almost like our state TV, kek.
For what it's worth, I agree with you and the Dutchman that a great many of the people on Sup Forums, specifically, claiming to be Catholic are essentially LARPers. They are wholly carnal people who admire, for example, the aesthetics of Catholicism or the perceived usefulness of the Church as some sort of tool which can be employed for political ends. Of theology they understand and care little, and I suspect, personally, that there is scarcely an ounce of love for God or one another between all of them. There are some exceptions, like Wolfheim, who as far as I can tell is a genuine and orthodox Catholic, however.
And to clarify, when I use the term "heresy" in reference to Protestants I'm not using it as some cheap insult, but in accordance with its correct legal use.
The builder must be really autistic to have come with this piece.
As someone already said, it is a memento mori, a reminder that we will all die and a warning against neglecting the eternal in favour of the temporal.
