I had the symbola font from the ubuntu repo installed, and got the little 20BF box.
I apt purged that.
I looked up symbola on fileformat.info, downloaded the zipfile,
and extracted it to ~/.fonts
>font updated jan 2017 btw.

Have a high resolution and large font size.

The fonts you linked aren't less blurry than yours. They are just bigger you you don't notice the blur.

A high resolution and large font looks the same as a low resolution and small font, only higher quality. If you don't have a high resolution screen you have to make a tradeoff, either have the font take up a lot of screen space, or accept the low quality. There's only so much you can do with a limited number of pixels for the glyphs to work with.
