I agree, the 1st font looks better. You could make a bug report on the KDE Phabricator (or whatever it's called). They actually consider your feedback instead of trashing on it

I like Carlito better, which is nearly identical to lato and made by the same guy. I think the difference is Eastern European slav glyphs?

I honestly never stopped to pay attention to my system's font. In the last 10 years I always used whatever was the default, mostly on debian.

More language support is a valid argument though. It's still better to ship less appealing font that will be displayed in every locale than beautiful font that only show blocks for chinks and poos.
