Easier to prevent automated bots from signing up. Obviously this is just security through obscurity but anything helps if you can weed out 99% of people that won't be able to deal with it.

No, this shit does crap all for bots.

It does not as the vast majority of people that implement these are not quite versed in what they're doing so most of the time all they attempt is loading up the form from the markup and submitting some requests.

Serious answer, it's because when you enter a company or university email, you get redirected to it's password entry page. My uni does this for Google and Microsoft accounts.
