I need Line not What's App but to answer your question, yes it is too much to ask since the effort to port and support a non-smartphone version of these apps isn't worth it for the companies in quesiton.

SMS is still rather big in America. There's no de facto standard IM client like how Yurop has WhatsApp so just texting someone beats needing Facebook Messenger, Kik, BBM, etc. depending on who you want to talk to.
