This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.
>order a nice looking handmade leather strap for my SARB >still hasn't been dispatched after a week >do some research into the company >find out they're a popular Reddit meme
I wish stupid GS would lume their watches. They can't be that ultimate "only watch you'll ever need" like a Rolex Datejust would, since you can't just put it down on the night stand to see it at night.
Austin Carter
>check out /fa/ out of curiosity >/wt/ posts everywhere Do you guys only go to their watch threads? I sure hope so.
Brandon Morgan
Imo crystals should always be flat
The domed hesalite crystal on my speedmaster annoyed me and was one of the reasons why I sold it ultimately. Same thing on my slavshit pisses me off and it's what's stopping me from looking into 5513's whenever it pops up for sale
Ryan Powell
But domed crystals are fucking sexy on proper watches. It's nice on dressy slavshit.

I haven't been on fa since the denim dan and casemods days but I imagine all they do is talk about Denzel washingtons, seagulls, and homos
So I have like 6 1/2 inch wrists, I want to spend 200 or less on a nice looking watch. I like the gen 2 v2 bambino which is 46mm lug-lug and a couple of the tissels which are 48mm lug-lug. Is 48mm going to be too big though? I just don't want it to look silly because of overhang or something. Does anyone have any other ones to recommend that might be a little smaller?
Parker Cook
Yes I know. My sarb017 is like -6s/day or something but I guess I've been lucky with my 33. It's been +2 every day
I keep reading stuff about how revolutionary the new agenhor chronograph is because it has central chronograph totalizers, and I keep thinking "isn't that 40 year old technology at this point?"
COSC is a certification. You thinking it's running within some range according to whatever questionable methodology you're using is not the same thing as having a watch tested and certified by an independent lab. Rolexes last just fine with 10 year service intervals and in fact they even recently changed their official recommended guideline to 10 years.
Hunter Bailey
You should replace the hands imo.
Eli Carter
>you should create a Franken out of a 47-year old all-original watch I don't think so. Or do they look like they're rusted from the pic? They're just flat black, by what looks like some chemical treatment.
Ordered a SARB033 back in early February. I like the style and the bracelet, just wondering if it isn't a bit too small. I've got 7 inch wrists that are flat. Opinions?
It’s on the big side but there is no overhang so if it’s comfortable I would say you are fine
Kevin Murphy
These straps are so comfortable I'm probably going to get the navy blue one as well.
No kidding. Unless it has a vertical clutch and a directly driven chronograph complication it isn't going to challenge the L5100 for mechanical tool chronograph supremacy any time soon.
M8, has that SNK as my first mechanical back in 2008... I do appreciate that watch as a beginner’s introduction into watches but I think many anons would agree with me on the fact that its design is a mess. >Flieger-esque dial in a small case >ugly non fitting cheap looking hands >ugly case with shit finishing >hideous strap or bracelets it comes with The strap you are using is funny looking and don’t have anything against it, but seeing its polished buckle and rings that don’t fit the sandblasted (?) finish of the case is visually annoying.
Jack Moore
Indeed! The Rolex it's based on was 35mm.
Matthew Gutierrez
It's trash.
John Barnes
Yea I'm going for the contrast betwen sensible/classic with tacky and colourful so the more contrast the better. How do people get that polished look on these which I see now and again? I presume you need a polishing machine?
Could you at least explain why? It’s a Seiko 5 after all, we al know it’s movement is trash but the looks of this one are really nice for it’s price. Also the finishing seems to be better than on other Seiko 5s.
Connor Flores
*It’s = its. I’m a lazy phoneposter.

When it scratches, and that'll be within the first month if not day if the watch as a bracelet, everyone can laugh at you. Oh, and the rolex service centers will raff too because no way they're ever touching that shit ever again. Ever. The way the spare parts world is going, this is not something you'll want down the line. If you're made of money, and for some reason want a black watch that's not some unscratchable ceramic, then sure whatever. For anyone else, it's about as smart as buying a tag aquafager.
Jason Young
In 10 years or whatever when your stuff needs to be serviced, how much are you will to pay to service a $350 watch?
The rolex is worth the service; is the cheaper mechanical? Maybe if you can find a guy that's COMPETENT to give it a once over for cheap, but still, that's what, 60 bucks? 50? Surely no less, right? It's only going to go up. And in 10+ years, how many decent independent watchmakers are going to be left in easy access to you?
You'll probably get the thing serviced if it has some sentimental value to you, but the world is littered with inexpensive (
Wyatt Price
I mean the looks. The fixed outer bezel and integrated bracelet look shit.
Brody Scott
I've been getting back into Prison Architect and that got me thinking: >what's a good watch for an inmate? >what's a good watch for a corrections officer?
The Rolex is only worth it because it cost so much. Would you spend 1000 to repair some piece of shit car from the 80s with 250k miles on it or get a new beater? Would you spend 2000 to repair your corvette or Porsche? Yeah of course, there's just a difference. If that Porsche was the same price as the beater they'd probably just get a new one.
Asher Phillips
So I got a loupe and tried to check the lubrication on my ST36. It's a pretty shit loupe, so I can't really see anything between the pallet fork jewels and escape wheel, but looking at the jewels and comparing to pictures and my other watches, it definitely looks lubricated to me.
Cameron Hall
LOL you are forgetting you can buy two of those watches for the price of one Rolex service XD

Would you want two entry-level seikos, or a fantabulous tune up and spit shine for your nice lolex explorer?
Chase Powell
Looted a bag of junk from me granny.

Is an alligator band pretentious? I think they look cool as fuck. I'm interested in the Bauhaus and getting a blue crocodilian strap for it
I never had the chance to get in watches, but now I could get an unused Seiko SNK805 for $50. Is it a good babbies first watch if I like the looks?
Luke Hall
>and getting a blue crocodilian strap for it My heart weeps for the wasted life of that poor croco that died so that its skin could be made into fugly watch straps for shitter watches.
And yet they have endured, fundamentally unaltered, since the late cretaceous. Perhaps they're onto something? We should all strive to be more braindead; life would be easier and we'd live longer.
