>The EU is considering a copyright proposal that would require code-sharing platforms to monitor all content that users upload for potential copyright infringement (see the EU Commission’s proposed Article 13 of the Copyright Directive).
The tone of that article is a little alarmist, but then the legislation is apparently rather overreaching. It's weird that they only suggest that people argue for white listing "software repositories" and not against the wider obligation for surveillance. How is the DMCA not sufficient?

Looks like the old dudes are at again with not understanding technology.
Jacob Barnes
It won't be just about copyright. It is an attempt at monitoring and surveillance, and it will be used to stop whistleblowers from posting information that threatens to expose those in power.

The European Union of regulator douchebags is at it again.

Tou got this code from stack overflow? Yer going to prison, mate.
Jeremiah Phillips
It's simple, just don't upload illegal code :^)
Lucas Lopez
How can ones and zeros be illegal? You can't patent math.

> Free speech: Requiring platforms to monitor content contradicts intermediary liability protections in EU law and creates incentives to remove content That's rich coming from github, the guys who closed an unmaintained project and all of its active forks for using the word "retard" with no prior notice to the people working on these active forks.

Things like this remind me of why we should make more effort to decentralise the Internet. There are few very powerful companies who handle almost all Internet traffic so when the greedy and corrupt politicians pass laws like this it's easy for them to target the majority of users. So if we had a more decentralised Internet, it would be easier to avoid these predatory governments and laws. But that's just my 2 cents

For years the EU commission, not "the EU", has been in the pockets of publisher lobbyists. This is yet another attempt to make legislation against the citizens' interests. Fuck this corrupt commission.
Xavier Brown
They're not corrupt (yet), just stupid. Their life consists of watching and listening to corporate propaganda telling them how important copyright is to people's freedoms and such shit. Find out who they are and send them mail telling them that if they're watching corporate propaganda they should do the exact opposite of what it says.
Look up the stuff that politicians are exposed to, it's fucking garbage.
Charles Myers
Yes that's right, surely they are aware of it since it's purpose is so similar.
Andrew Edwards
I saw this on Stallman's personal page a week ago
Jason Reed
Hoe can you even monitor against copyright infringement when most copyrighted code isn't public?
Dominic Ross
They strike your portfolio down and lie in court after that to claim the code is theirs.
Juan Jones
I wish people would research things that are actually documented. The EU was never some noble effort that was vulnerable to corruption. The EU itself is corruption given form because it's a project by major european industries and corporations. They designed it, they pushed for it, they guide it. The fact that some idealistic suckers bought the false promises doesn't change what the EU actually exists for.
Logan Perez
Are you seriously arguing about a retarded proposal?

This one won't so the various rightsholders groups who represent hollywood will try again, under a different name. And again. And again. Until it does.

oh shit oh shit oh shit.... now I have to take down any code that offends niggers and faggots.
