Fellas, what's really the matter with Windows? How can you all sit here and say Linux is so much better and Year of the Linux Desktop will be any day now when nobody but a bunch of Sup Forumsays use it? Windows is far more user friendly and can do so much more, maybe Linux devs should take a page out of their book. Pic related: It's their book

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
I see you've opened up with an extremely detailed and intelligent post. Please continue elaborating.
What's wrong with using something that actually works?
Now don't get me wrong, I appreciate what Linux tries to do and Microsoft are piece of shit scumfuck assholes, but Linux just isn't up to snuff. Nobody wants to use it because it's so unintuitive. The layman can't pick it up and use it easily as they can with Windows. Combine this with Linux's image problem in that its userbase is seen as unsavory to the general public, and it will never take off.
Good work my friend
i agree user!
Seriously though, Linux is literally the opposite of 'just works'. It's fantastic when you have time to tinker with it but if you want to be up and running quickly and get to actually work only IT people want to deal with any of Linux's shit.
>maybe Linux devs should take a page out of their book
Linux distros and standar DE must empower women, not be user-friendly.
Can a Linux OS even run Legacy of Kain? I ask because it's one of my favorite series.
Have you ever seen someone use a GNU+Linux OS with no prior experience with any kind of operating system? You're just saying that Windows users are used to doing things one way and an't adapt to other ways.
Is that a TV show or something? Because you'll find support for all multimedia files on most GNU+Linux distros. Even if those file types are non-free.
>Windows install takes several hours
>then have to install drivers after its all setup and you disable all the bullshit
>Linux install takes 10 minutes
>ready to use OS as soon as its finishes
really made me think
Am I seriously the only guy here using a wonderful Macintosh?
>you have to install linux updates every 10 minutes
Try looking into a game called "Soul Reaver".
>Seriously though, Linux is literally the opposite of 'just works'.
depends on which distribution you use. Arch is fast and easy if you know how to install a distribution, debian is fast and easy even if you don't, and ubuntu is great for even /the most retarded/ user.(Not saying it's a bad distro-- Just that the install is extremely user-friendly). Similarly with the after-install configuration.
>game
No thanks. Games are for children.
>Update installs in background
>don't even notice
>Windows update makes computer unusable for several hours
"It just works"
There are some things Windows does well and some things Linux does well. Using both of them to their strengths is what smart people do.
>every 10 minutes
>thinks often updates is bad
have fun with your security holes, bugs, and half the features.
No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.
Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.
One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?
(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.
You're probably one yourself you fucking dolt.
>no u
Good one, kid. Go play with your toys while the adults speak.
>Waaa waaa stop liking what I don't like
>Can you help me with my computer, user? I just upgraded to Window 10!
Is it so hard?
I'm not saying that. Some adults like watching My Little Pony, that doesn't mean it is suddenly a programme for adults. Same goes for video games, even if adults play them they are still fundamentally for children.
Blood Omen 1 is likely older than you.
Stop trying to fucking tippy-toe and act like what you aren't.
>>Windows install takes several hours
i mean that's just patently untrue
By saying it's for children you're being reductive and trying to come across as more mature. Sad and pathetic.
>Blood Omen 1 is likely older than you
Children have been playing with toys since the dawn of man, so I imagine most toys are older than I am. What is your point?
my little pony is marketed for children, and is presented in a way that primarily markets towards childrens' interests. What about games are similar?
>t. someone who disabled windows update because Sup Forums told them too
I'm just plainly stating a fact. You can enjoy something even if it is designed for children. Just accept that you are enjoying something for children and shouldn't be proud of it.
Games are just digital toys. They are just another way of simulating playing pretend. Most people grow out of this once they reach puberty. Obviously some don't. Games are designed to appeal to children and childish adults.
Call Microsoft Customer help. You've bought your Windows, haven't you?
What hobbies do you enjoy?
Programming, woodwork, learning history and philosophy, playing music. Why do you ask?
Well I think you've mistaken me as one who'd fucking sit there and go "durr" over fucking games like Soul Reaver or Blood Omen. I don't even like games myself, unless they try to be something much more. Take for example how the Legacy of Kain series a wonderful, fictional piece of work with its story, writing, and riveting portrayal by an amazing cast of talented actors to lend their charm and voice to its memorable characters for them to play their roles in this vampiric Shakespearean epic. There's also the fact that the series' soundtracks are also fucking amazing.
So what if it's a fucking game?
It's an interactive work of art.
It's not the games that cause gun violence, it's the operating systems. Statistics show that 89% of shooters are Linux users. This makes sense when you think about it.
Linux users are like their system. Unpopular. Outcasted and misunderstood by others. They are a minority, more likely to be homosexual and often sadly ridden with diseases like aspergers syndrome. They have to spend all their time getting their computer to work, so much that they become infatuated with what they've created: a computer, and, far too often, a monster out of themselves. They feel obligated to use the computer more because of this, because of all the blood, sweat, tears, and cum they've put into it. They become antisocials, NEETs, furries, Sup Forumsfags, losers, and, in the end, armed and ready.
Better run, better run. faster than my penguin.
Because this is the problem I was talking about with Linux user's image. They all come across as pretentious blowhard know it alls and you're no exception
>Statistics show that 89% of shooters are Linux users
>source: mein arsch
I highly doubt you even know how to appreciate a work of art.
Well, I'm not trying to market a gratis operating system. Why would I care about the image of GNU+Linux users?
Because it's partly what keeps people from using it.
Oh so you're into learning history and philosophy (on top of fucking playing music), and yet you've been able to dismiss a good series that makes historical allusions and elaborates over fatalism, on top of having respectable soundtracks for each of their titles, like the Legacy of Kain? Just because it's a fucking game?
Pretentious blowhard know-it-alls, more like tasteless troglodytes if everyone follows that fucker's example. Which I'm also sincerely and genuinely hoping NOT to be the case at all. Like fuck, there goes an entire community full of possibly like-minded people. Because of one fucking moron.
How about you try "17 Moments of Spring" on for size, or listen to some of Sufjan Stevens' works.
youtu.be
Sorry pal, but it ain't the Germans that are lying
Answer honestly Sup Forums, is the real reason you use Linux to hide CP from law enforcement?
Yes but replace child porn with hardcore snake on man beastiality
...
>philosophy
LOL
Well, what OS would those CP-spammers use whenever they raid the site?
I know it's a loaded question, but you get my point.
I don't care if people use it or not.
You severely overrate the magnitude of your toy. Children are prone to do that.
>You severely overrate the magnitude of your toy. Children are prone to do that.
That's what I said to your daughter.
I just said that I don't even like playing games.
The musical composers are great, the story's writers are good, but the gameplay isn't much of either.
That might be biased to say since I don't even really LIKE games, but you'll still be pretty dismissive anyways.
No, really. You can stop pretending now.
There's nothing wrong with windows user, if you like ditzy sluts. If you enjoy passionate lovemaking with high-class, intelligent, sexy computers like I do, you choose Linux.
>The musical composers are great, the story's writers are good
In what ways?
Are you the guy that fucked the computer in the other thread?
M-maybe
Well I mean when I'm congratulating the music composers, I'm saying that their music is good.
Since for example SR2 is a game, it allows for some fantastic variations of ambient music to
other types of alternative versions of one track. All of which does well to accommodate the
areas or sequences laced throughout its world.
Here's an odd fact about it too: they never used pianos.
As for the writing itself, the storyline itself is good.
The character dialogue (with the world-building of Nosgoth provided) is very rich.
...but I think after what transpired earlier, I think we got off the wrong foot.
I feel ashamed over having lost my composure over someone who apparently enjoys woodworking.
What makes what happened even more quaint, is that it's made me look more of a child myself.
But no though, yeah. I also enjoy history and philosophy. Reading about Alexei Nikolaivich was
pretty tragic in itself, as well. I'm also considerably-enough a fan of "classical music" as well.
Tabloid-tier melodrama (with content that boards like Sup Forums would LOVE to jerk off over)
is absolutely far from any of my interests, like with whatever lame headliners that
news stations like to depend on an awful lot as well.
If you would though, I'd like to know more about your woodwork.
>I'm saying that their music is good
>fantastic variations of ambient music
I asked why they're good, not if they're good.
>I'd like to know more about your woodwork.
This isn't the appropriate board. You can discuss woodwork on /diy/.
jesus fucking christ Sup Forums is the most autistic board
According to statistics you suck dicks on a daily basis and have swallowed more semen than has been used to create the entire Chinese population. Are you going to stop at any point? No? Didn't think so.
windows -> personal computing
linux -> server
mac -> queers
it's really that simple
Are you thinking of pre-installed Windows? Even when I first got into Linux, Mint worked faster for me than any Windows ever did. A few weeks later, Debian took as long as Windows - and that comparison is putting mere weeks of Linux experience against many years of Windows experience.
>windows -> personal computing
No, windows -> brainlets
Windows->tech illiterates
Ftfy
Pardon the delay, I was kept by other matters.
Kurt Harland was the one who composed songs for Soul Reaver 1 with a custom MIDI driver, with Amy Hennig having inquired him to program his tracks to change based on current in-game context. Essentially speaking from that point onward in the series, its tracks would go on to be elaborate and dynamic pieces. The sound team also consulted level designers in regards to the appearance of in-game places, which really helped with tuning characteristics between the music and the in-game areas. They've also gone and created distorted versions of every track for SR1 and SR2 for the sake of their "spectral-shifting" mechanic.
Additionally with how dynamic these rhythmic tracks are and all, it's also important to say that they're distinctively memorable and well-orchestrated tracks for each iteration of an area's theme; when the overall tracklist goes on to have a wide variety of musical sounds and their application.
Oh, I nearly forgot to mention Kurt is the lead singer of Information Society.
They also included "Ozar Midrashim" for Soul Reaver 1, which came from the 1997 album "Don't Be Afraid".
I'm done writing for this post now, but I'd wager if I had better habits then I'd write more.
Except I think I've written enough, especially for a thread like this. So it works itself out.
I know there are better people to elaborate over the subject matter itself, but here it is.
I'd also love to write about SR2's tracks of the Sarafan Stronghold, Light Forge and etc :P
With how much I'd normally obsess over music, I'd figure I would've made music long ago.
So... yeah. Basically everything I like about LoK virtually has nothing to do with the gameplay itself.
I wouldn't go on about puzzles, platforming, combat and whatever.
I hope that's something you come to understand.
Mac just workz, windows a shit
Also FYI, I'm not these two posters.
i didn't say it was a bad thing :^)
You'd think if you actually obsessed over music you would know what makes something good. Dynamic, memorable, and well-orchestrated say nothing about their quality.
>:P
What is that supposed to mean?
Read the windows 10 TOS. Then read the GPL.
I've never been into group think, sorry Pajeet, my Linux install stays.
saged.
It's almost like people like LoK for its deep storytelling and such. I never got an answer as to whether or not it can actually run on Linux though, just some vague bs. Guess I'm sticking with Windows.
>deep storytelling
You don't know what that means.
>I never got an answer as to whether or not it can actually run on Linux though
Dosbox.
>Windows is far more user friendly and can do so much more
That's wrong, though, you only believe that because either you're a retard or you've never actually used Linux for more than 15 minutes.
Pretty Soul Reaver wasn't a DOS game
I looked up Legacy of Kain and it said it's from 1996.
