What just werks for you, and why is it Ubuntu?
What just werks for you, and why is it Ubuntu?
I dunno, it works well for me and I've handed it off on a shitty laptop for some relatives and they've got no complaints. I count that as just werks, although I'm anticipating the text that it doesn't any day now.
From experience, never install linux on anyones computer, under any circumstances. You will either become their 24/7 tech support or they will blame you when they break it.
These threads have got to stop
Ubuntu is the only distro for me that doesn't just work. It's inconsistent. Sometimes I have 2 WiFi icons in my notification area, another time a keyboard shortcut that doesn't work anymore, after the pulse audio Daemon would not start. It could be perfect, a more up to date Debian for normies but in reality it's just a mess. LTS is good after 1 year of bugs fixing but then it has already become old.
I know, my brother-in-law at least seems open to learning. Suppose I'll see how that goes.
NixOS
Linux Mint worked better for me than Ubuntu and Ubuntu MATE. Some random bugs present in the desktop or in the settings panel present in Ubuntu weren't present in LM.
GnomeBuntu 18.04 is going to suck
Gentoo.
>genpoo
That's not how you spell Arch Linux
Debian
arch/weston
Mint Cinnamon
literally never had a problem with openbsd
People say that Gentoo is a meme but I bet they've never tried it.
t. Sup Forumsentooman
Ubuntu 17.10 with Unity, Manjaro KDE and Solus.
Those are my go to distros. Mint is okay, it werkz but it's not for me.
MX Linux is the only Debian based justwerks distro which is worth a damn.
stop the autism pls
ArchLabs just werks
>linux
>works
Show host faggot
Debian
I always end up going back to it
I was on arch for a while, but I realized that all the AUR shit I can just get from ubuntu PPAs (as long as I'm on debian testing, PPAs tend to break stable)
I used gentoo on my desktop for about a year but I'm just to brainlet to properly take advantage of it,
Solus, been my main driver since late 2015. I'm honestly surprised how popular it's gotten as of late.
*Ubuntu Gnome senpai
Debian Sid because Ubuntu can fuck off with their mining.
> What just werks for you
Arch unironically
Amusingly Debian has broken on me more than any other distro. Aptitude loves to break itself and get stuck in these awful dependency or locale loops.
Ubuntu is harder to use than Manjaro and no one will admit it
That's only happened to when I tried adding PPAs to stable.
It is already the most stable Ubuntu, because GNOME rocks.
Ease of use scale:
OSX
Actually, I wouldn't install anything other than Ubuntu on a relative's computer.
Installed it for my mom over 3 years ago. One of the best decisions of my life. Fixing wangblows after normie usage every week was hell.
ubuntu is only "hard" when you have really new hardware because they literally just pick a random time to freeze debian testing and ship it out. Generally even the latest ubuntu will have an older kernel and drivers.
That's why I recommend fedora to normies with new hardware. Other than wifi drivers from rpmfusion and some codecs, everything just werkz.
fuck off retard
I don't understand what the robot has to do with ubuntu mate (which is literally just debian testing with mate preinstalled and mate tweak)
Xubuntu LTS would like to have a word with you.
impact.ttf
Ubuntu works for me. It's the only operating system I use besides iOS.
The individual wants you to question reality whereby you develop a mental illness. These are potentially dangerous memetatic diagrams should you read too much into them.
Gnome 3 is bloat and removed functions
Luke, you're a dumbass who felt for the "low wattage dual core on laptop" meme.
Unironically Windows 10.
why is there screen tearing with nvidia cards in xubuntu kubuntu and the fix is different for different distros. only arch and gentoo have proper wiki but im too brainlet to use those without breaking things.
>I LIKE MY LAPTOP TO ONLY LAST 2 HOURS ON BATTERY EVEN THOUGH I DONT DO ANYTHING MORE INTENSIVE THAN SHITPOSTING AND JERKING OFF TO GAY ANIME PORN
>he isn't a power user
>quad core will only last 2 hours
>what is power management
>not wanting power at your disposal when you need it
Remove yourself from this board.
Being a power user means working smarter, not jerking off over specs you dumb autist.
>power management
So gimping your system for portability is better than just using the correct hardware for the job?
I'm going to go ahead and assume that you're a thinkautist.
Guess what, even your shitty QM CPU isn't really that much more capable for productivity that a ULV, with the difference between the two being lugging around a 7lbs autistic monstrosity with a 1366x768 resolution vs a nice light machine with a long run time and a FHD screen.
You faggots really need to fuck off
Debian stable. It's extremely comfy and my desktop daily driver.
I tinker with Slackware on the side but Debian is my long-term go-to. Extremely comfy and I don't have to think about it at all.
The thing is, a normie actually messes up Ubuntu harder than Windows. Just imagine how many viruses and stupid adware installers are on Windows.
But if someone manages to fuck up something ,even in Ubuntu, it's harder for a non-techie to fix it.
This 100%

gey boi leave.
I'm gonna miss Unity.
change any technology for something new or different and you'll have to be his/her tech support guy.
Not only windows or Linux
Luke... At least update to 17.10 or something, unless you're holding out until 18.04?
i prefer scaling the fonts down a little.
>At least downgrade to GNOME or something
>IOS
Yeah no. Requires accounts for cloud, apple and itunes in order to work properly. And the default settings is set to logout these accounts often. Neither of my parents managed to install apps without my help, and I reseted their passwords and their mails synced to their passwords multiple times before just picking the passwords myself.
>never install linux on anyones computer,
I have installed lubuntu on three seniors computers and no one have needed tech support afterwards. I even managed to get their Vista era printers to work and bring some life to their old computers. They watch porn, do some printing, pay bills, read some shit etc. Most of their tech-related life circles around firefox and as long as it won't change, they won't bother me.
Debain with mate. I can deploy all the programs I need and
Debian Sid here, how do you guys do it on your desktop? I run Debian on my NAS, but refuse to use it on the desktop since the packages are so outdated.
Arch.
I just decided to try Linux this summer out of boredom, first with Lubuntu for a couple of weeks and then I decided to go balls deep and try Arch. It was a rough start since I was a complete noob about Linux and every minute I had to check the wiki, eventually my first install didn't get well, mostly nothing was working properly and that was entirely my fault but that didn't kill the joy I felt when I managed to run a DE for the first time. That allowed me to improve furthermore and that's why I decided to install Arch in a more reasonable way for the second time. It lasted for a couple of months without any major problem but unfortunately in November the HDD in my laptop died after 11 years of service, so I had the opportunity to re-install Arch on a SSD, which turned out to be pretty good both in terms of stability and general comfyness, matter of fact I suppose that was determined both by my personal achieves from the fails of the past and a general knowledge obtained through the readings of the wiki and forums.
This guy gets it
>So outdated
You just don't get it, do you. Like, you don't even know?
Fuck.
Maybe I should catsfish some fools.
You eventually reach a point where you can't be assed to update and keep on top of everything in your system anymore.
I stick to testing because I use KDE and WINE and I just can't take how old those are in stable. Next release is probably gonna be fine though, WINE 3.0 runs everything I could ever want just fine and KDE 5.12 is stable.
I'm willing to bet money you didn't install your OS with full disk encryption
Windows + Ubuntu VM
Windows is nicely configured to work well with media keys, hibernate, suspend resume, wifi, graphics, touchpad etc.
Linux has a nice terminal but everything else needs a lot of configuring.
Flip that around and you got a winner
Fedora.
I use Fedora and I've used Linux since 1993 and other UNIX variants for years before that.
Linus uses Fedora too.
Fedora is great for new hardware and it you want to setup a PCI passthrough VM because it's literally just copy pasting commands if you have the right hardware.
Also literally the best install of any OS, especially the way it handles FDE and partitioning.
That being said the repos tend to be lacking and some packages that I like to use like qutebrowser and the PS2 and GCN emulators basically aren't maintained anymore and are on ancient versions.
I missed ubuntu
>GUYS AM I COOL YET?!?!?!?!
>WHAT'S THAT? I NEED AN ANIME GIRL WALLPAPER?? BUT I DON'T WAN MY MOM TO SEE...
There's a MATE panel layout that mimics Unity's interface. Is the most similar to Unity that you can find right now (without counting Unity itself).
ubuntu mate is pretty fucking based
I just wish they would have all their improvement included in upstream mate.
OH GOD WTF EYECANCER HOW CAN YOU USE THAT SHIT
mint works better for me
Void + i3 for me. Headless install goes fast as fuck, throw i3 on it and just install whatever you need with zero effort.
Debian just werks.
Debian with gnome is the most retard friendly thing I've ever used
I use Fedora with KDE. No problems and I've been using it for a whole year now, but I do switch between desktop environments depending on what I feel like using. I wasn't a fan of Ubuntu when I last used it since I got non-stop errors and it was just generally buggy and broken in one way or another and often had driver problems. Fedora on the other hand just works. The only things I really had to change were some utilitarian things. I installed a patched version of Firefox 58 to get the KDE file picker instead of Gnome no thumbnail dogshit. Then I also installed the TLP packages for automatic mobile power management, since this is a laptop.
Liking Antergos with Gnome. It's nice and modern looking ootb and just werks, and has the AUR.
Got tired of fucking with Gentoo and all the yadda yadda yadda. I think I've come full circle.
Debian
Xubuntu
Linux Mint
>Pick something so that I get into ubuntu and learn bash for a possible future administration of linux servers.
>Bear in mind: my hardware is really bad. Age of Empires 2 and Warcraft 3 literally stutter when enough units in place.
Don't want the most retard friendly system. Something that forces me to use the shell but isn't only just a fucking terminal with no visual interface.
Funny enough senior citizens seem to fuck windows up more. Ubuntu is simple as shit and like you said does everything they need.
Ubuntu is shit, its default file manager doesn't even tile.
Should I switch to Solus if I've been using windows 7 for the past 9 years? I know I won't be able to stay on 7 forever, but 10 scares me.
fedora gnome
Go defrag your hard drive
no thanks. it's a ssd

why would he?
He isn't autistic
