Linux fundamentally struggles to get traction because it doesnt have corporate backing for all the drivers, so you're left to either auto-detect-and-hope or configure-it-yourself.
It's inherently a more competent OS and better for development, configuration, and operation, it just lacks the support to make all the nicities work automagically.

Manufacturers and developers would have to include linux if there was a change in the market. Wouldn't that be nice?

It's objectively accurate. It's structured exactly how an OS should behave, UNIX styled architecture makes perfect sense.
What doesnt make sense is a never-ending tunnel of folders with one giant system folder sitting somewhere.

The existing operating systems are optimized for different uses. Windows being a shitshow surrounding what it's useful for doesn't mean Linux has to replace it with utmost urgency, especially considering that the migration process takes it's own time.

Browser statistics depend on Linux users not being paranoid and blocking everything, sold units assumes people use the stock OS, iso downloads assume every download is a user.
We don't have a good way of testing who runs what OS on a large scale.
But if you were at least pointing to a statistic or something, we could argue over "the numbers" or "the facts" you seem to agree with.

But the reason it wont gain mainstream traction on desktop pc's is because of how fragmented it appears to someone who is new to linux. Even though 90% of the distros are essentially the same, and can all be configured to be exactly the same, someone who doesn't know linux sees the fact that there's literally hundreds of distros and then immediately shuts down rather than make a decision (that at the end of the day doesn't fucking matter).

Normies (and I hate this word, but I've seen it literally countless times) don't want choice. They don't want to have to think about what's best for their needs. They want to be told "use this one, its the best for everything, here you go". As long as there are a million different distros to choose from, linux will never ever EVER be popular amongst consumers, unless it comes prebundled on their hardware.

The reason that Linux doesn't have more widespread personal adoption is because of software.
Linux doesn't have as much software because it's not used in organizations.
It's not used in organizations because nothing competes with AD/SCCM.

So if an organization wants a real directory service, they have to buy into the Windows ecosystem, at least for the desktops. Servers are a different story, and as such we see lots of server applications and support for Linux.

If there was a viable AD/SCCM competitor on Linux, sysadmins would start dumping Windows as fast as humanly possible.

Plus for most people, their phone or tablet _IS_ their desktop now.

That's a negative. MS Office doesn't run on Linux, and it's simply not acceptable for a business to have 15% of files with formatting and compatibility errors.
Microsoft knows that Office and active directory are the biggest things holding back corporate Linux adoption, so they work hard to make sure that office files are hard as fuck to use in 3rd party programs.

We failed on the mobile market. A win would mean a Linux distro in our pocket.
Android is more unstable than arch, nobody receives updates, and nothing about android success is because of the kernel. (And it is not 90% of the market)
We failed on the server market. A win would mean every household would have a server running free software. This is not the case.
And we absolutely failed on the tablet market. IPads are the preffered baby sitter and nobody else are using tablets.
