I've been seeking a straight answer to this question for months now.

CAN YOU INSTALL A DISTRO TO THE INTERNAL STORAGE PERMANENTLY WIPING CHROMEOS AND IF SO HOW??

she'll hate you if you don't get her a macbook

google is your friend.
;^)

it depends. some have m.2 ssds, or regular hdds. if they hve yhese, you should be able to wipe chrome os . even if it stays, the base installation is only about a gigabyte. now, if you buy one with emmc, chromeos will alaways be there.

Depends on the model. Some have custom firmware that doesn't play nice with standard operating systems. Without a specific model, your question can't be answered further.

Are pixel books cheap now? Can you install Gentoo or any distro on them?

Thanks, man. I'll be sure to look for ones that don't use emmc. I have a couple other concerns.

I heard that there is a "factory reset" that can happen if you press spacebar on boot. Is this true, and if so is there any way to disable it?
Do chromebooks allow you to boot regularly off media and install? Like, on an x86 machine, I would shut off the computer, plug in my USB, boot up while mashing F12, choose the USB flash drive or whatever, and then go through the installer. How does this look on an ARM chromebook? Same thing, or is there a different process?
google was not helpful here

No specific model in mind, but I'd most likely want an ARM one.

This is not true. The Acer 14 Chromebook (EDGAR) has an emmc and it works fine. There are some issues that require a custom kernel, but GalliumOS has a variant for that board type (Braswell I think) and Arch works fine but you'll need an external keyboard for the install and setting up the new kernel. No ChromeOS.

Thank me later

It's nice, and you can also load up Chromium OS on almost any laptop, and just give it to them.

I found a Pixel 2 for $145 brand spanking new, currently running Gentoo on it without too many issues. Granted it's the 4gb model but it still works pretty damn good and the screen is sexy as fuck

that's in Intel chromebook you dipshit

They were close to becoming something great, the first set had some with x86 processors and replaceable SSDs. Then they went down the toilet as they all use shit grade emmc and ARM chips.

>He wants (((x86)))

Bought it for my mom and it just werks. That's about my opinion of it, I don't give a fuck if Eric "The Failed Abortion" Schmidt spies on her.

I have an ARM chromebook, in fact I specifically bought it because I am averse to botnet x86 chips. It runs Devuan and uses libreboot. We don't have _enough_ ARM chromebooks.
