ITT: we each post one (1) sad Country song until we max out the thread and kill ourselves and leave all of our worldly possessions to our blue-tick hound dogs.

Shit. Literally was about to post "Nobody Girl" from his Gold album.
youtube.com
never really thought of that song as "sad" until now. someone should do it as a ballad, if it hasn't already been done yet.
>Shit. Literally was about to post "Nobody Girl" from his Gold album.
When he wants to write a sad alt-country song, he fucking goes all out.
the rest of her work was more pointedly about heartbreak, but Walkin After Midnight started her career. It really set a template for so many songs from the 60s through the 90s
Even when he half-asses it, his sad songs can still draw blood. i've been getting back into Heartbreaker ever since it was re-issued. The problem with that album was there are so many amazing songs that they just outshine the less amazing stuff which is still p. good in retrospect.
youtube.com
she was very bluesy and honky tonk which surprised me. i was expecting a ton of ballads when i started with her discography and it totally wasn't that at all.
>The problem with that album was there are so many amazing songs that they just outshine the less amazing stuff which is still p. good in retrospect.
That's pretty much his entire career in a nutshell. His mediocre songs are really good, but every album (during his prime) had at least a few phenomenal tracks. For fuck's sake, Cold Roses, Jacksonville, and 29 were all released in the course of 7 months. It you put just the God tier songs from each on an album, fuck man.
>don't ask for the water
Well, fuck. I'm going to go on a Ryan Adams binge. I haven't been on one in a while.
Well, it ain't country, but progressive bluegrass is close, so Imma posting it anyway.

>don't ask for the water
'cause she'll teach you to cry
...damn.
the lyrics on that fucker alone... christ.
but yeah, he need an editor. i'm been binging on his pax-am singles myself. avoid the alt version of "com pick me up" if you haven't heard it yet btw. trust me. hear it once and you'll never hear the original song the same way again.

i've loved nickel creek since they were their debut when they were still fresh faced and skinny. hoping the watkins can talk fiona apple into doing an album's worth of gothic country as her follow up to idler wheel. that would be amazing.
youtube.com
Yeah, if they could pull together an original album with Fiona it would be amazing. They released Watkins Family Hour with her last year, but it was overwhelmingly meh.
Sara's got a new album coming out soon. The first two singles are so-so. The performance is great, and the production is really nice, but they haven't gripped me the way her very best stuff did.
Today, OP was not a faggot.
Alison Krauss - New Favorite
youtube.com
Her voice. Just damn.
aww i haven't heard that one yet. i heard sean's new album. aside from a few songs towards the end it was pretty meh as well. the only bluegrass i'm looking forward to is the dolly parton. if it's half as good as the 3 albums that make up her Acoustic Trilogy from the 2000's I'll be a happy fella.
And another great female vocalist you never see around Sup Forums.
Yeah, I don't know about Sean. With Nickel Creek's stuff, I usually loved the songs that were written by him. And I enjoyed a fair amount from his first two solo albums. They weren't great, but they had some great highlights. But his last album just fell flat for me. I saw Nickel Creek on their reunion tour, and then I saw Sean solo in a really small venue (i.e., a glorified bar), and he just had no energy solo. He's always been moody and aloof live, but he just seemed annoyed to be there, and it really came out in his music.

glad to see her getting posted every now and then on Sup Forums i recced her time album and posted "look at miss ohio" here and there a few times last year but honestly i didn't think she'd catch on here.
damn. i'm pretty rural so i never get to se anybody unless i travel. chris does seem like the battery that charges nickel creek yeah. the watkins seem to be pretty low key people.
sorry bud. didn't think foreigners dug our americana shit. i just prefer linking topic videos because they're almost always the best quality. and yeah that marty album is pretty fantastic.
>i'm pretty rural so i never get to se anybody unless i travel.
That blows. If you have an opportunity to see Chris live, even if you have to travel, take it. I'm fortunate enough that I live in a major city where Chris, Sara, and Sean visit on pretty much any tour they do, and an hour away there's a decent college town where they'll often stop and play smaller venues. In the late Nickel Creek days and early Punch Brothers days, I'd see them at least twice a year. Chris is worth seeing live, if for nothing else than the crazy spectacle of his performance.

seeing nickel creek has been on my bucket list since before moot founded Sup Forums so he could have a place to discuss anime. willie nelson, dwight yoakam, and charlie daniels were my first 3 concerts ever. i intend to add nickel creek to that list before the world goes to shit.
Underrated artist. More well known for shoegaze, but he does country/folk well.

Chiming in and saying that while I'm not entirely familar with Ryan Adams' material, he does do great Grateful Dead covers and even played with Phil Lesh in one of his bands. There's even a fan compilation of all the Dead songs he's covered.

fascinating. whenever i'm asked to define alt country i jut say if rock doesn't want it and pop doesn't want it then it belongs in alt country. this guy definitely fits the bill. someone here once wrote that alt country was "the last refuge of the lone man and his guitar" style of music. i'm beginning to believe that more and more these days.
the guy has so many lost albums that'll never get legit releases. the p4k heartbreaker re-release namechecks the famous ones. personally i'm dying to hear his 'is this it' covers record.
pitchfork.com
I've seen Willie live. He's worth it.
Well damn, that's interesting. My two favorite genres are, in all honesty, shoegaze and bluegrass/americana. I can't believe Ive never heard of this guy. Thanks for posting bro.
Holy shit. I just watched some videos of Lift to Experience. That's something completely new for me. Damn, Sup Forums, you proved useful today.
Here's the thing about Ryan Adams: He has put out a metric fuck ton of music. Most of his stuff falls somewhere on the rock/americana spectrum, but occasionally he'll venture into pure country, and eventually he'll venture into something resembling metal. It's hard to rec his albums to somebody, because you may love one and hate the other. If you like his Grateful Dead covers, you'd probably like Love is Hell or Jacksonville City Nights.

i can't choose just one favorite version of this song. tammy's voice is perfect for it but emmylou nails it production wise and of course willie does a devastating version on milk cow blues.
Here's his shoegaze band.

shoegaze and alt country were my two favorite genres before i started lurking Sup Forums.
Well damn, son. I've honestly never met anybody with similar tastes as me

Tim McGraw - Don't Take the Girl
oh i've teared up to that before.
Glad to see this thread hasn't bit the dust yet.
youtube.com
Been bumping it off and on all night while downloading and shit. Someone else can take over now I'm gonna get some sleep.
You did great, bro. I wish I had something to contribute, but I honestly don't know this genre that well. I've really enjoyed a ton of stuff in this thread, though.
This guy is totally underrated. His album Last of the Country Gentlemen is incredible from front to back. I really wish he would put out some more solo work.
This is the first time in a long time I've found something on Sup Forums that was totally new and blew me away. I've been listening to him since this thread started last night.
Bump
just saying that this thread is fucking fantastic, will definitely be checking out some of the artists who i'm less familiar with
contributing some Mississippi John Hurt, great guitar player, catchy and with good lyrics too
youtube.com
shoegaze and alt country are also favorite genres of mine... there's more of us out there I promise
youtube.com
If you haven't check out emmylou harris' cover of "may this be love" from her wrecking ball album (1997). I swear it's the sound of Noise Country being invented.
Glad you got something out of the thread guys. It's just a matter of keeping it bumped i guess.
Forgot link.

oh man this song is fantastic, I would love to make music like this
>I swear it's the sound of Noise Country being invented.
I'm generally aware of Emmylou Harris, but only her standard country/bluegrass/folk stuff. I had no idea shit like this was out there. This is surprisingly fantastic.
I totally get that feeling, bro. I feel like this is the type of sound I'd want to come up with on my own.
This is not normally my type of thing, but I'm now 6 tracks into this album, and it's fantastic.
Here's something interesting.

He's got this bizarro Jeff Mangum vibe going on, like Jeff from an alternate, darker universe.
He's a funny guy though.
