The 4x4 tracks sound like the filter house tracks that were topping charts around 2002-2005, plus traditional hip-hop tracks that stopped being trendy in the early 00's.

I personally enjoyed this a hell of a look more than RAM (which I didn't necessarily hate either).
They were unapologetic with their esoteric choices and use of sampling, but what made it really work for me was the Gorillaz like style-by-committee approach to the music. Everything was groovy and sparkling and fresh. That's what The Avalanches do, they want to curate a houseparty as much as a roller disco.
Not perfect, but certainly the most entertaining release I've heard this year.
