Why does experimental music also tend to be dissonant and uncomfortable? What are some examples of proper experimental stuff that is also nice and melodic? Some optimistic experimental stuff would be cool, have heard very little of it

how do you imagine comfortable experimental music sounding?
I can't really fathom it in my head

yeah it seems like you have to shoot for one or the other

Something by Bjork

Not really experimental

Neither is this

Because the avant-garde has conventions.

youtube.com/watch?v=23F2KD2zn_Y

It's called ambient music

>sigh
>not experimental

I actually made an experimental song that I think is pretty positive sounding if anyone wants to hear it

Isn't it just psych metal that happens to be about something nice for once? Does that make it experimental?

youtube.com/watch?v=zhvM4Uqqw1w

I suppose you think putting your dick in the mouth of a dead pig is experimentation too

If you don't consider it experimental, what do you consider experimental then

what about vaporwave

OK thanks

Far from finished and more electronic than usual for me:

prog like Close to the Edge (yes it's experimental fags ;) )

underrated

Ambient music, by definition at least, is generally too vanilla to be truly experimental

Try "Yerself Is Steam" by Mercury Rev

Are the following albums experimental?

Unwound - leaves turn
This heat - deciet

This is a question that moves music forward, OP. Go ahead and do something different.

That said, I think dissonance is "in" or something, at least until this century, maybe now on things will get different.

Remember that 'classical' music was pretty music for a lot of centuries

...

Yeah I think I just might. I can think of a lot of beautiful experimental stuff, but it's usually dark in terms of theme and execution; might try and come up with something different. I guess it depends on your definition of experimental; I guess SMiLE is pretty experimental in one sense, but obviously psychedelic and upbeat at the same time

I found this vaporwave style up beat tune and I bought it it's pretty good kingboltmusic.bandcamp.com/track/pool-side

Dirty Projectors do a good job of blending pop with experimental tendencies.

Just listen to Spencer Clark and James Ferraro pre 2010.Listen to everything by them. Here is something to introduce you

Pic related I guess

Always see this around here but never listened to it. Only just realised that it isn't some weird robot on the front. What is the genre?

Melodic glitch/IDM with some shoegaze mixed in.

I would consider pic related rather experimental.

I've also used this album to help me fall asleep so it's quite comfy

cool

was gonna post this. Either that or Jim O'Rourke.

>Stereolab - Dots and Loops
It's very enjoyable and easy-listening, but also the instrumentation is really complex and layered.

The microphones mount eeire

There was some guy that was trying to make a program that would anayise music reviews to find what musical characteristics are good ones.

And then make music based on the results the program found.

His website had some info about it, telling pitchfork was one of the website he was going to get his info from.

I saw this few years ago and I dont remember the website or the project name, so dont know if he finished it or not

Animal Collective - ODDSAC

There is also komar and melamid and dave soldier album.
komar and melamid once maid some questions and told people from each country to answer them and then made the most wanted painting and most unwanted painting based on the answers (one for each country they made the questions and one for internet).

Dave soldier asked them to make a musical version of it.

The problem is that people at average have an ultra low musical exposure, when they said bagpipes sucks, they said this based on the few bagpipe songs they know as some example. In the end most on internet prefer the most unwanted music to the most wanted one.
