does london calling count as ska

I had a VW Fastback. It kind of came with the territory.

I haven't yet, but I feel like I'm about to go through my first one, I've been listening to a lot of The Specials recently

I'm with you. Unfortunately, I had a really awful nu-metal phase to compensate

everyone goes through either a pop punk phase, a hip-hop phase, or a ska phase before they start exploring music

Ska is good stuff, I saw Skatalites twice and Rico Rodriguez. I´m more into instrumental reggae and dub now.
Ska punk sucks btw

If you liked Oingo Boingo, chances are you like ska.

not liking ska (first or second wave) is hard
avoiding a phase where it's your "thing" is easy

Ska was my shit when I was 13, glad I had one instead of the other options posted, I would add metal to that list though

I went through neither :P

metal isn't a phase. one the unfortunate soul discovers it, they're stuck a greasy prepubescent forever

I did all three and never quit. Of course I branched out, but all of those are great starting points and I'm always game for some 2 tone or Reliant K even if I know it's "not Sup Forums enough".

It would be a shame to never move past it, but I guess it never lost appeal for me.

but madness are funny! :P

i never cared much for ska but lately i realized i really like brass in rock music, and got into Streetlight Manifesto because of that

what about metal
or pop
or dadrock
or any major genre

yo i still like all of these genres

I love Streetlight user

Pop Punk here.

I still listen to a lot of the shit I listened to in that phase though.

Ah, the famous 'ska is shit meme'.

I've never gone through any of those. in fact, I'd say my music taste has always been at least decent.

Streetlight used to be my fucking shit. Listening to them recently I couldn't really stomach Kalnoky's lyrics, but those albums are still pretty solid.

nobody is saying that ska is shit itt

If I can ask user, what don't you like about them? The lyrics themselves or the sound of his voice

man streetlight puts on a fucking AWESOME show. one of the best i've seen

what's the appeal of ska? It's one of those scenes I honestly just don't understand at all, just why?\

If you mean you don't care for his singing voice, check out his stuff as Toh Kay. Acoustic adaptations of all the songs he's written.

The Saddest part is that now ska will forever be associated with shitty pop punk bands like the mighty mighty bosstones and reel big fish which is about as far removed from traditional Jamaican ska as you can get before you have to call it "pop rock with some horns"
That's essentially what it's devolved into.

What's the difference between true ska and reggae

Ska isn't that bad yo. Fishbone, madness, operation ivy, the toasters, choking victim / leftover crack, streetlight manifesto, the stupid stupid henchmen are all really good. I could never have a ska phase though. It's not interesting enough of a genre to be focused on exclusively.

I went through the Odd Future phase.
Ask me anything!

>dadrock phase
>metal phase
>edm phase

>tfw dad rock phase
>then indie phase
>then back to dad rock
and before dad rock was classical i guess. i brought in rhapsody in blue to my fifth grade class for our reading period and the other kids thought i was an insane weirdo for that. ;_;

Fuck you

ska is thrash
mr bungle and sublime shall always be remembered however

Why are Americans just so stupid then?

Why do they think a punk-rock subgenre is a Jamaican genre?

No, but I had a heavy and power metal phase in hs.

>mfw I got into ska nearly a decade after I started listening to jazz when I was very young

Are cake ska? I remember being into them in my ska phase and they have horns, but I'm not really sure if they're ska.

No, i was never a faggot

Ya, ska is complete shit

No, they're rock with horns.

>Ska (/ˈskɑː/, Jamaican [skjæ]) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues.

Are we talking about ska, 2tone or third wave user?

Trojan Records produced some really good ska, The Specials, The (English) Beat and the Selecter made some great 2tone and Streetlight Manifesto were great thidw wave, Reel Big Fish were meh.

i never got into the fashion/scene/fad thing, but the music was fun.

guess what, you're being a faggot in this very moment

Is there a Ska essentials chart out there?

Good music is NEVER a "Phase"!
