Nevermind defined the youth culture of the early to mid 90s while American Idiot defined the youth culture of the early to mid 2000s

Has any 10s album come close to both of these?

Lol pardners and their geetah muzak shite

vaporwave annd edm skrillexy stuff wether its a good thing or not

probably not since there's not one cohesive youth culture due to it being easier to discover new interest through the internet. which leads to everyone listening to different genres/artist.

>American Idiot
That's not how you spell "Toxicity"

90s = rave
00s = UK garage/dusted
10s = grime

>albums
wew

>Toxicity
>Defining youth culture
wew lad

you know I was actually revisiting American Idiot recently, and its really not bad at all, it's actually very good.

When I was a kid I loved this album so much because I felt like it really spoke to me, then I went through this really pretentious punk phase where I had the incessent need to catergorize all music into a dichotomized view of quality, namely albums that were punk or albums that were shit.

American Idiot definitely was not punk. So I hated it all the way up until about last week where I decided fuck it for the sake of nostalgia.

Anyway its really really good actually. Its definitely still not "punk rock" whatever that means but I would say its the last truly great pop rock/pop punk album that I've heard. The way the songs switch ideas and voices of narration and tempo mid song only to revisit them later sorta reflects the ritalin addled adhd youth culture it aims to portray and speak to. the melodies are better than decent even though half of them (along with certain chord progressions) are nothing more than throwbacks or homages to stuff that the ramones did already. (Jesus of Suburbia taking from Judy is a punk, St Jimmy taking for Blitzkreig Bop etc.). The story that it aims to tell is a convincing and moving one. I could really feel for the characters and it helped me get sympathy for the group of people I think it's trying to reach out to. There is definitely genuine pathos being expressed here, when he asks "Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed?" I dunno...you just cant help but believe him.

One thing I think people dont credit this album for is how self aware it is. it has a sense of humour like many of the best pop punk albums of its time. Overall I agree with your opinion that this really defined the youth culture of the mid 2000s (for better or for worse) and just wanted to share some thoughts but didnt want to start a thread so yeah.

It's a really good POP punk album. Sure it's not traditional punk and was heavily influenced by the popular rock genres at the time like emo and indie rock.

What I love about this album is like you said if you listen closely there's some genuine emotions (other than love) going on. Green Day made an accessible pop rock album that's able to convey some political undertones to the mass plebs. Not a lot of artists can do that while still keeping fun

probably Halsey or ToP or some other shite

can we have a greenday appreciation thread? Favourite songs?

When I come around is genuinely one of the best pop punk songs of all time.

WE ARE THE NEW AMERICANAN-

HOLY FUCK I love that song so much. Only just realised like the music video it's a GOAT "walking around doing nothing" song. I'd just roam around listening to it wondering what I can do. Visit a friend? See an ex? idk

>10s = grime
nah
also dubstep, trap

>trap
Good 1 pardner

this

Basket Case (Favorite, by far. Even compared to any song today)

American Idiot

Boulevard of Broken Dreams was ok

all of you fuck off pls

Basket Case is definitely dope what do you think about Homecoming off AI?

>green day

Lol u faggot punk pop bitch

Late 90's early 2000's is radio head territory bitch boy. Go buy some eyeliner instead of posting on my board

They force it to be catchy, but it's really raw

what I find interesting about their early stuff is that most of it is about being meth addicted white trash but most of their fans are like 13 and have never touched marijuana.

Probably Twenty One Pilots with their one hit wonder - Stressed out, but that identifies more with people that have jobs and are out of mandatory edication

>chavshit
>relevant anywhere but in bongland

DUDE
WAR IS BAD
LMAO

Without a doubt it has to be "Days Go By", by The Offspring

Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers

some of the political commentary is a little overplayed, especially now, but fucking hell you really can't fault some of the major switches on theme, tempo and tonality in this album, a lot of it being flawless.

1039/smoothed out slappy hours is still one of the best green day albums, it feels so much more genuine, I don't know if it's because it's not as over produced, musically it's nowhere near as refined as american idiot but fuck me the chorus to Going To Pasalacqua will never leave me

I don't think there's a cohesive "teen culture" now like there used to be, basically what said. However, there are some subdivisions of teen culture that can be defined by certain albums, like the teenage emo/scene culture being defined by Welcome To The Black Parade.

don't even try & deny it

Green Day influenced the 90s too u cumguzzling dunderfuck, they were popular before nirvana

the globalization of music with the increase in use of the internet has basically guaranteed that we will never have an album that people can reach a consensus on.

Is Halsey even that popular? I only ever hear about her on here and from tumblr drones.

it's less about albums now and more about individuals - int he 2010s it's probably Drake, Taylor Swift and Beyonce...MAYBE Kanye

This..
Those albums came out when mtv some how still had relevance as well as fm radio. It wont happen again until some media company steps up for.the arts on all mediums like mtv did when it first started.

Pic related is 10/10 pop rock. Youth sucks now so closest thing so far is TOP.
