Not who you responded to, but my interpretation is this.

Teenagers and 20-somethings tend to be a bit more melodramatic and emotional. Oldness/aging/reality/living in the real world sort of shakes up that youthful sadness. Basically, as you get older, you gain wisdom and knowledge that everything isn't all that bad, and even if it is, it can be made better, and killing yourself isn't a good idea.

However, I could be wrong.
