No idea why Slovenian is still that diverse. Maybe that's because their standard language is nearly as useful as their local dialects so there's no reason to know it well anyway
(Brits and Germans still keep their dialects despite their languages being relevant though)
I don't really think the disappearance of the Russian dialects is necessarily a communists' fault. Contempt towards illiterate speech existed here even before the revolution, as far as I know.

And all Slovenes know the standard language too. They just don't use it to communicate in daily life unless meeting people from a region with a very different dialect.
Btw would you say Slovak is as far from Russian as English from German? A friend (who knows no Russian) told me this and I seriously doubt it, I would say there are no two Slavic languages that are as far from each other as English and German. I know basic Russian and I findir much easier than German, I am native in Slovak and fluent in English and I would say Slovak makes like 90 percent od basic Russian understandable to me after a bit of exposure and learning, but German is practically completely unintelligible to me even after 4 years of it in school. My knowledge of English did not help my German at all. Of course Slovak and Russian are not immediately mutually intelligible, and my friends who had 0 contact with Russian do not understand it, but I would say it is much, much easier for us to understand you and learn Russian or vice versa than for Englishman to understand Germans or vice versa.

Lol no. English is very different from German in both grammar and vocabulary. East and West Slavic languages, on the other hand, seem to construct sentences in a more or less similar way, and none of them got as much loanwords as English did.

ye nah, Poles are not Slavs, you are a divergent side-branch like the Lithuanians. That third consonant shift only confirms that Lechtic is not Slavic.
In light of this breakthrough, I suggest that the West Slavic group be dissolved and that Czech, Slovak and Czecho-Lusatian get included into a Central Slavic (as in Central Europe) subgroup along with Slovene.
