Because people all around the world got bored with status quo, cooperation, diplomacy, all these shades of grey in the world and all the politicians who work slowly amd delicately. 1) Democracy works as intended and your vote actually matters. There's no sinister power that controls the politics to ensure that no matter what the people say the elites are in control. The people wanted a change and they are getting it.
2) American government is so weak and divided that Russians were capable of manipulating the election in their favour
3) Nothing changed, he's just a figurehead to distract the citizens while They continue to run things.
4) There's a power shift behind the scenes. Some elites are being retired and new groups are taking their place. He is personification of the change, although possibly not the change his voters hoped for.

in reality normies dont care about all of those. they judge a political policy/plan based on what they concern in their everyday lives and go along with a simpler argument/policy. when would you care about LGBT and vague human rights to minorities irl? that will explain everything about it
