1. Filing down the "firing pin" would only make the rifle strike the primer lightly, resulting in unreliable operation.
2. What you mean is "file down the sear" which worked on open bolt semi auto weapons.
That is why open bolt semi autos are illegal, and have been since 1984.
#2 would also make the weapon highly impractical and almost impossible to control since it would just dump the whole mag on full auto with no way of making it stop.
First, you need a functional understanding of what makes a gun automatic. Second, you need machining tools to make that altercation. Third, in the case of AR's, you need to replace a part, which cannot be purchased so you have to machine that part properly.
The majority of owners of guns cannot accomplish this.
The firing pin is housed in the bolt carrier. I just file that down?

Unless they are built a bit differently. I think the Civilian HK 416 is made to be incompatible with parts of the military version. But I guess it's not a problem with other guns.

Also I'd hunt with it if they'd let me, the only thing I can shoot with it these days is vermin classified by my state. If I could bag deer or turkeys with the thing, I"d bring it out everytime.
Depends on the owner. I have narrow hallways in my house, and wouldn't want to swing a rifle around in that situation, so I stick with my .45, but to each their own. Use the best tool for the job.

It depends. It take a bit of training to be able to move and shoot with a rifle inside a building. And for a one shot stop, a shotgun is more reliable. Pistols are easy to move with and can be carried hands-free with no impairment on maneuver. All these weapons sit side-by-side as arms because they're good for different purposes.
Best reason to own a rifle in a city: riot. Keep the street clear; you'll have fewer personal problems.
