He would've have given the characters internal struggle, make the movie have some pop myth quality, and have given it some visual wit and nice cinematography

Captain America would get all the Jesus imagery, for one. Probably surf along the water on his fucking shield at one point for the walking-on-water bit.
He'd absolutely die, like in the comics, probably after being betrayed by Tony and probably get denied three times by Falcon, then have to carry some metaphorical "cross" (maybe some kind of explosive) to a big generator, and Bucky would take on the Simon of Cyrene role and help him carry the generator.

Then he'd have Tony fly Bucky out of there while Bucky screams and tries to make him let go, Tony crying silently inside his suit. Captain dies inside the facility in order to contain the explosion or some such contrived plot device.
