Bootcamp was certainly the best part of the movie, but it was cool to see how Joker got on in Vietnam.

It does become depressing, but that's what the director was going for, to show how fucked up and futile war really is because most movies don't.

Given that the very high scores and the reviews this movie gets from ordinary fans talking about how much they liked the whole film, I'd say those that think the movie went to shit after boot camp are in the minority.

But I can see where you are coming from, I just think you might need a few years and a few viewings to get the message the director was sending, this isn't an ADD young person movie, it's art.

Kubrick wanted to show that homeland is also full of horror and war is futile. That's why the scenes in the US are more stressful and exciting to watch whereas the war-part is sleep-inducing.

First third: 10/10
Second third: 5/10

The first part is more interesting, and the center was Pyle. Pyle was a good lad, for some stupid reason he thought he could be a soldier. Pyle wasn't a soldier, he lack everything to be a soldier. The drill instructor believed that he could make anyone a good soldier, this belief was his doom, because he made him soldier but in the process Pyle lost his mind. This part of the movie show you that you don´t need to go to war to fuck peoples minds, for me is the best, Vietnam was just ok.
