After watching The Night Manager, I can't think of anyone more perfect.
Tom Hardy would just be another blunt instrument like Craig's Bond.
Hiddleston has the charm, the class, the mean streak and, most importantly, he has an extremely likable screen presence. His most memorable roles are him being a bad guy and audiences still root for him.

If the Broccoli's and Mendes wanted to have a private meeting with Hiddleston, no-one would know about it. Simple as that.
This is just a way of gauging the public response before making a formal announcement. Standard practice in the industry.
