Have you ever seen Jon Stewart's interview with John Yoo? The guy completely falls apart when it's against someone who's in any real position of power.

His most recent bit where he makes fun of Trump at the USO is a good example of the circlejerk. If you read about it anywhere else other than Breitbart they make it sound he got tons of laughs. But when you actually watch the video you hear some slight boos and a lot of groans. Now because I served, I could tell you that you're not really allowed to voice your opinion on politics while in uniform in a public setting, so the fact that there wasn't polite applause says alot.
