Wanna fight?

>Won a fight?
What fight did he won? Why was that a question? Why didn't they even show it

>comparing David Lynch and Refn

>believing there to be a difference

>Lynch creates art he believes in and understands, even if we dont
>Refn intentionally creates convoluted pretentious messes in order to bootstrap himself to Lynchdom

The harder you chase it, the faster it runs.

I watched Eraserhead recently. What an absolute pile of wank. I think I can only like surreal shit if it's not real (animation, paintings etc.) cause in the real world it just looks like some edgy 22-year-old film student trying to appear deep.

>Oooh there's a weird woman with fat cheeks singing a song while stepping on giant sperms
>so deep
>so symbolism

Don't talk shit on David Lynch until you see him make Quinoa.

>thinking artsy films are good

Lynch and Refn are both crappie directors that just want to appear deep

LOOOOOOOL you're basically what is wrong with the world.
You're the prime example of stupidity.

Nicholas pls leave

>being this retarded

mfw this thread

Is this film good? My gf Loves gosling.

Pls comment.

It's heavily stylized with nice shot framing (if you care about that) but most people won't find it interesting because of how artsy it tries to be.

DERAILING THIS THREAD, WITH NO SURVIVORS

no

I love that kind of shit Dude. Film as art is what drives me to continue watching.

Does the framing detract from the film? For instance hateful 8 had way too much framing. Maybe 45 minutes could have been cut from the film.

Will I feel like the movie wasted my time?

How is the dialogue? Is the writing good or only directing? Good actors can't give bad lines (Hayden Christianson in starwars 3)

Imagine Drive with half as much dialogue and twice as much shot framing.

Refn sucks but I can't wait to blow load after load to Jena and Elle in The Neon Demon.

literally perfect. post moar

Good? Nah.

Entertaining? Depends on your tolerance, I liked it enough to finish it and not feel like I wasted my time like with Civil War.

I feel bad for Gosling. This and Lost River scared him out of art films and now he's taking whatever acting gig he can get.

Please don't ever partake in film discussion ever again.

Was Goose's dick really that much smaller than Billy's? Or was the mother just being a cunt?

According to the context that she is grieving for her retarded son I would guess that she's telling the truth.

Where was the police chief's sheath for his blade?

...

No it's really terrible.

Lynch doesn't understand his movies, he said that most of his movies don't have any sense, because doesn't have any sense.

because life doesn't have any sense

There's a touch of the supernatural with Lynch which blunts the impact, so to speak, of his arthouse films.

>refn
>being compared to lynch

Everytime.
oh, is this babby first arthouse movie?
They have NOTHING in common

Don't talk to ke or my board's anons, ever again.

>I'm gonna punch you so super hard!
what did he mean by this?

You are all such faggots.

Lynch and Refn are both some of the best filmmaking artists of all time, and OGF is a masterpiece.

I bet none of you can refute me without saying "Reddit," "pleb," or "pretentious."

You've got a short memory if you think that Lynch has enjoyed universal critical acclaim throughout his career. Fire Walk With Me, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway and Inland Empire all received very mixed reviews on release.

I liked that movie.

Refn wishes to be Lynch but his substance is all superficial -- and idiots on here eat it up.

>watch the movie
>couldnt understand it
>read online what it was all about
>realiz I'm retarded
>it was actually pretty simple
>decide to shit all over it on Sup Forums
>that will make me feel better
>if someone points out I'm just too pleb
>i'll reply
>muh Freud

>Where was the police chief's sheath for his blade?
He was God so it was a magic sword

The only good Refn films are the Pusher Trilogy.

>Film as art is what drives me to continue watching.

Film is always art. This film is poorly constructed art. Randommess for the sake of seeming obscure and brilliant doesn't help anybody. It doesn't tell you anything, it doesn't make you feel anything except "Boy I can't wait to see what random things he chose for this next scene". It's copying film without knowing why. Instead of something strange being part of the plot like in a Kubrick film, something that he was dying to do and it hadn't ever been done before, they instead say, what kind of things are experimental and random so I can be as good as Kubrick?

expected it to be a decent follow up to drive, but it wasn't.But in terms of autism, Refn and Gosling delivers.

Except OGF is one of those few arthouse movie where every fucking scene has a very specif sense and a very real narrative function.

I challenge you to find one scene that has no purpose

>muh it wasnt Drive 2

Refn is a good Director.

It's an alright movie, but it's not that good. Not even Refn's best, Valhalla Rising was a very similar movie and it was far better than OGF.

Reminder that Refn is actually color blind.

It wasn't random though. It's just way too obscure than necessary.
The story is a modern retelling of Oedipus tragedy with a Pagan God.

>Saturday night
>Grab my doritos
>Grab my mountain dew
>Grab my Katana, folded over 10,000 times in the purest Chinese steel
>Turn on Drive and OGF
>Recite both movies line for line
>Grab my Scorpion jacket and swing it over my arms, hop in my Honda Accord and drive around with a brooding, devil may care attitude
>A real human bean

The Pusher trilogy and Drive are literally the only good things Refn has ever done.

>inb4 Valhalla Rising/Bronson

both trash.

Refn needs to stop trying to do artsy shit and stick to doing crime thrillers.

>There are people who thinks the film is obscure for the sake of it because it lacks dialogues.

Don't you have a Nolan film to watch or something?

Wew get a load of this guy.

>I don't understand these things so they're all exactly the same

Drive was easily one of the worst movies I ever saw.

but you gotta admit that OGF is one of the weakest Refn flick.

Mulholland Drive is the best film of this century so far.

Get a load of good taste? pls do.

REAL HUMAN BEAN

Why do people think Bronson is artsy? If you think Bronson is artsy then what do you think about the work of Bergman or Tarkovsky?

Anything that deviates from the most simplistic story structure is "artsy" to fuds who only watch mainstream films.

>Blade Runner 2

He is coming back big.

>what do you think about the work of Bergman or Tarkovsky?

garbage who are only remembered because film school students are forced to watch their droll schlock while they take entire 6 month courses dedicated to convincing them that they're "good directors" and "artists"

>David Lynch
He makes the best fuckin' films. If I ever meet him, I'm gonna grab his fuckin' neck and just shake him, and say thank you, thank you for makin' such excellent fuckin' movies!
Then I'd twist his nose all the way the fuck around, and then rip off one of his ears and throw it like a, like a, like a fuckin' Frisbee.
I wanna chew his fuckin' lips off and grab his head and suck out one of his eyes and chew on it and spit it out in his face and say thank you, thank you for all of your fuckin' films!
Then I'd pick him up by the hair, swing him over my head a few times and throw across the room, and kick all his fuckin' teeth in, and then stomp on his face 40 or 50 times.
Cause he makes the best fuckin' films. He makes the best fuckin' films I've ever seen in my life.
I fuckin' love him, I fuckin' love him.

What is it with Gosling with this neon font and lighting in his movie posters, just like Lost River and Drive.

It's pretty cool if you ask me.

youtube.com/watch?v=exli6rGldBc

I...actually yeah this is pretty accurate

t. regretful film school student

Weekly reminder that if you use the terms "artsy", "pretentious", etc, you're a garbage person with garbage opinions.

okay what is good art for you then? can you list a name or two who makes true art in your opinion?

>i didn't like/get these so everyone else must be lying/wrong

Thanks for letting us know your opinions are worthless.

>I don't want the guy that this post is directed at to reply to me because I'm a pussy so I'll just be a pathetic passive-aggressive faggot and write it here whilst hoping he doesn't see it :^)

>i'm a pleb retard and have no idea what makes a film good

top fucking lel.

Fuck off

Accessibility makes good art and that will always be the case. If you can appeal to the uneducated, dull of mind and to high society then you've made something that's worthwhile. If you only care to appeal to one side then either you're simply hack with only marginal abilities as an artist or you're an insecure goon who feels he's above people.

Before you come back with

>LOL fugging pleb

please remember that Shakespeare was considered plebian trash in his day...yet he has been celebrated across the globe for over 400 years now. Will fate be as kind to your Tarkovsky? Absolutely not.

It was a challenge
"You won a fight? Sounds unlikely"

That's why he kicked Goose's ass

kek

It intentionally inserts convolution into an otherwise straight-forward (and symbolic) story in order to guarantee that the first viewing won't make complete sense

In this manner,it uses surrealism as a gimmick rather than as an expression of the story he wanted to tell

>be user
>have shit taste
>make a shitty bait thread
>get replies
Congrats!

You are insecure if you calculate what will people like or not like. Art is a representation of the artists ideas/emotions/skills etc. Other see that art and take what they want from it.

And your shakespeare argument just emphasized it more. If you think Bronson is artsy and you don't like Bergman or Tarkovsky, then I presume you don't like 2001: A Space Odyssey either, And that movie has the same argument like with Shakespeare, considered trash then, and now it's considered as the ultimate cinema masterpiece.

There wouldn't be any art if all artists aimed for accessibility. If you look back at time, art was always pushing in the other direction of the society as a form of expressing thoughts. Shakespeare damn sure wasn't thinking "hmmm will a 10 year old gipsy boy enjoy my work hmmm". He wrote what he wanted, no matter who likes it

>Valhalla Rising was a very similar movie and it was far better than OGF
This

OGF is like he tried combining Drive and Valhalla Rising
and failed IMO

Cosmopolis wants a word with you

did you even understand the fucking symbolism at ALL?

It literally sounds like you had no fucking clue what was happening the entire time. If you are THAT fucking stupid, then you should just never open your mouth again

Tarkovsky is my favorite arthouse film director for the entirely superficial reason that his films are so fucking comfy. And that he does symbolism with both subtlety and depth.

I think Lynch is an okay filmmaker and a fascinating personality, while Refn is a worthless fucking hack. Literally all his films are bad, with their only merits being the occasional nicely composited shot or soundtrack.

symbolism is the lowest ranking art tool

Here are a few quotes from Tarkovsky himself:
>"I am constantly being asked what this or that means in my films. An artist does not have to be accountable for his intentions. I only desire to induce feelings, any feelings, in viewers. People always try to find "hidden" meanings in my films. But wouldn't it be strange to make a film while striving to hide one's thoughts? My images do not signify anything beyond what they are... We do not know ourselves that well: sometimes we express forces which cannot be grasped by any ordinary measure."
>"I am an enemy of symbols. Symbol is too narrow a concept for me in the sense that symbols exist in order to be deciphered. An artistic image on the other hand is not to be deciphered, it is an equivalent of the world around us. Rain in Solaris is not a symbol, it is only rain which at certain moment has particular significance to the hero. But it does not symbolise anything. It only expresses. This rain is an artistic image."

Don't forget the part at the end where you cut his eyeball open with a razor because buñuel did it first.

What the hell does eraser head do that un chien andalou didn't? It's just the same uncomfortable shit wrapped in a very loose plot. However, the plot is so loose and lacking in direction that it doesn't contribute at all to the the viewer's ability to associate with the character(s). Lynch also claims to not have seen any of the collaborative between Dali and buñuel at the time he made eraser head. Whether or not that's true, anyone with a brain can see eraser head has significant parallels to the surrealist work.

The fact of the matter is that an audience in the 1970's couldn't make the connections for themselves because they couldn't just look up a movie from the 1930's online and watch it. For us, when someone mentions X is like Y, the likelihood you can't get access to one of those things very easily is extremely low.

I guess eraser head is sort of fun, especially when you watch it with someone who you can tell is very disturbed by it, but all in all I think creating a good plot AND layering it with themes like those in eraser head is more impressive that just trotting out a series of shocking visuals attached to a dilapidated plot held together by scotch tape and elmers glue.

>What the hell does eraser head do that un chien andalou didn't?
Nothing in particular, it's just overall more enjoyable.

Lynch's films are these profound, life changing works of amazing artristry, they're just rather enjoyable dream-like films.

>symbolism is the lowest ranking art tool
Maybe, but I think the broad range of skill with which any "tool" can be implemented makes your claim moot. In other words, symbolism done very well still blows ____ done poorly right out of the water both in terms of artistic worth and difficulty to achieve.

>overall more enjoyable
This is just where I disagree. I think the knowledge that Buñuel's work came about 40 years earlier and the fact he didn't even masquerade a plot while lynch pushed around a poor one makes Buñuel's work more enjoyable.

Refn was praised for Drive, that was stylized and artsy. I do think Inland Empire was pretty bad, but Mulholland Drive was fucking amazing.

>Lynch creates art he believes in and understands

It's intentionally abstract. Idk what you mean by understand but it's clear that even he doesn't have a literal interpretation of much of his own work, which is fine.

I respect that. I'm not personally invested in either of them. My favorite lynch film is The Straight Story anyway.

Have you watched Songs from the Second Floor user? Could be a cultural recognition thing, but it's one of the few abstract/symbolical films that hit me quite hard emotionally.

oh and

>Lynch's films are these profound [...]
aren't I mean. Sorry.

The goose

Wew lad

The quality of this cesspit has really gone down

Refn is God tier, pls go back to BM vs SM generals and leave the Patrician things to us

I haven't watched either of those, but I will. I enjoyed Lost Highway.

Why though? he is right. I felt exactly the same after watching Muholland drive. If that movie had any other name on it no one would have pretended to like it.

there is literally nothing wrong with being abstract and ambiguous while still carrying themes and emotions (that do not have to relate to you necessarily)
there is everything wrong in being murky and completely senseless
I didn't watch OGF so I wouldn't know but most critique of that film that I read was pretty weak

it's a literal pleb filter

Refn was a Sup Forums meme before capeshit was.

What the fuck is this post. Are you fucking serious.
