I'm from California and speak with the surfer accent when I meet people who have it. It's strange because I can't help it. Otherwise I have the usual American accent.

I'm like that with my southern drawl. Go from average midwest with a hint of south to full-blown hick depending on who I'm talking to.
I've met some people my age (middle twenties) from Florida who do the same thing, I've noticed. It's definitely become more common with us young'ins. My dad's accent is the strangest because he lived in a variety of places in his youth, mostly the Midwest and New England, so I've noticed him "code switch," if that is the correct term, around other people. We're definitely a nation of many people...
Subconsciously changing the way you speak to more match the person you're speaking with is a known phenomenon. I hear my mother do it when she's talking with her long-time Moroccan friend on the phone.
