Heisei Godzilla

Post your opinions on the 80s and 90s Godzilla films. Are they the best of the series? Or were they simply lazy cash-ins? What went wrong? What went right? Explain.

The poster art was GOAT.

you start pls op
I got a torrent and downloaded a few cool sounding titles already but haven't checked any yet, have only seen the american ones

Godzilla vs Biollante is basically the perfect Godzilla movie. It has Godzilla being a huge threat to Japan, a cool fucking monster to fight, badass military weapons and schemes to stop Godzilla, an environmental message, psychic shit, and a kickass soundtrack with Ifukube themes.

They were okay.

Creatively they peaked with their first 2, the moment they made them year by year they had to compromise a lot of things, making godzilla 100 meters didn't help. The only one I can say I really disliked was Mothra 1992, that was pretty bad

Overall my least favorite of the 3 series, but alright

Needs 1985

So stoked that this is finally coming to blu ray this year.

>tfw Godzilla 1985 Blu-Ray announced

RoG is. 1985 is forever locked in legal limbo sadly so based Burr scenes and Dr. Pepper will never see release.

85 was the best by far. They're all great though

Yeah, well that's ok with me.

Interesting you say that. Godzilla vs. Biollante is beloved now, though it under-performed back when it was first released. IMO, it's one of the most ambitious films in the franchise. And it's like Toho lost all ambition over the next several films. You can literally see the decline in effects and general effort as the films went on. Plus, it's not hard to find things done better in the Showa films (ex: Mothra). Gamera films of the same period, made with far less money, are better in almost every way.

Honestly, they are all my least favorite.
Most of them are paced poorly and the kaiju fights are nothing but beam spam with no melee combat.

I got these ready to watch in chronological order:
Terror of Mechagodzilla 1977, Biollante 1990, vs Mechagodzilla 2 1993
vs Megaguirus 2000, Giant Monsters All-Out Attack 2001, Tokyo SOS 2003, Final Wars 2004
any thoughts on what to watch first, what to expect?

forgot vs mechagodzilla 1974

You should probably stick in godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 1974 and godzilla x Mechagodzilla considering 2 of those movies are direct sequels to these

Overall not bad. You can find most on KissAsian

Megaguirus is the worst out of all of those, but you'll have to judge for yourself.

All good imo, like said, you're basically missing 2 key ones. Imo Mechagodzilla 2 is the weakest of the bunch

right forgot to mention 1974 mechagodzilla one, and getting x mechagodzilla, tnx lads

SFX director literally became an alcoholic after Biollante which affected quality. Also movies were pumped out to sell toys. Execs didn't care about the quality of the films as long as toys could be made.

My personal favorite since its the series i grew up with. Godzilla vs Biolante/King Ghidora/Destroyah are fucking goat

Space Godzilla was awful

Best: 1984 and Biollante
Underrated (at least in comparison to the others): Mechagodzilla and SpaceG
Worst: Mothra 1992

And fuck the Mothra trilogy

Heisei era is the best era, especially if you count the comics and Godzilla was very popular until G98

1 - Godzilla vs King Ghidorah
2- Godzilla vs Destroyah
3 - Return of Godzilla
4 - Godzilla vs Spacegodzilla
5 - Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2
6 - Godzilla vs Biollante
7 - Godzilla vs Mothra

GvsSG is a guilty pleasure and Godzilla vs Biollante was boring to me, I mean there's a lot of good scenes and all, but the final fight was anti climatic as fuck, still the best Godzilla design ever

Too immobile compared to Showa. Just two monsters shooting beams at each other on opposite sides of the screen gets monotonous.

Start with GMK or GFW

then the movie from the Heisei series, Biollante first, then Terror of MG

You can skip Megaguirus and Tokyo SOS, they're not that great

>what to expect?
The two first Mechagodzilla ones: 70s cheese with better effects than what was usual for the time. First's focused on action, the other tries its hand at personal drama and darker themes, but it feels odd because, well, it was the 70s. Also, lots and lots and lots of explosions. Fake nipples.

Biollante: what the others said. Highly popular (some say a bit overrated) film, carries some of the faults of the entire Heisei series, like overwrought plots, underwritten and acted characters, pacing issues. Pretty neat effects for their time.

Mechagodzilla II: doesn't try to be deep, can be fun. Probably the least memorable Mechagodzilla, though.

Megaguirus: forgettable, a mishmash of ideas done better elsewhere. Can be fun if you're in the mindset, but it's so goofy at parts that I read the director got rid of the effects supervisor for his next films.

Giant Monsters All-Out Attack: another one of the more popular films, and as usual some think it's overrated. Ambitious, deep, nice effects, but it doesn't reach its full potential and the monster personalities (legit evil Godzilla, good guy Ghidorah) bug some fans.

G X MG and Tokyo SOS: I remember liking the first, but it feels like half a movie because it was planned as a trilogy. Tokyo SOS starts out interestingly but drops the ball less than halfway in and gives up on any semblance of thematic meaning, devolving into a mostly forgettable fight scene. Godzilla is also just kinda there, not much focus on him, doesn't even feel like a character, more like some random animal that pops up and Japan wants to get rid of it. Nice effects at least.

Final Wars: full-on craziness mixed together from various American blockbusters, with kaiju smeared all over them. You either love or loathe it, gotta see it to believe it.

What is your opinion on Tohokingdom ?

Heard they were autists, but no details

This

Worst kaiju fandom area desu

Everyone arguing about how they think their opinion is the best and the worst parts of the fandom in general.

Took one day on there to realize

Godzilla vs Mothra poster is amazing.

Shit mods. I'm pretty sure many of the knowledged older fans have been banned. Tamura and Space Hunter know a bit about the different releases of the films. Chris M is pretty cool though.

Isn't that every fandom?

Yeah, it is. But I'm generally pointing out that that is the main gathering of the worst of the worst

It's like capeshit threads on here, or, almost

There was a guy who worked on Godzilla the series and wrote articles for scifijapan I think, don't know if he's still posting there

I get why fans like them, but most of the films don't do it for me. They're updated and more serious compared to the late-60s, 70s stuff, but still come short. Casts are too big, characters underdeveloped, pacing feels off. Effects, themes and acting are all over the place. Too much ripping off of popular American movies of the time. The entire series feels like it's almost "there", but all the shortcomings pile up, and it ends up being a frustrating letdown. Omori a semi-hack.

G vs MG II is actually my favorite of the era because it tried to be more fun instead of tackling some deep issue in an overwritten manner.

> Fake nipples
Will Anno give us real fanservice?

>Omori a semi-hack.
I semi can see this point

Biollante was just so great for me, but the other movies he wrote seemed to decline steeply. Mothra you really see this because they claim humans did all this but it was the asteroid

Godzilla vs King Ghidorah is heavily inspired by Terminator 2, but it's still the best Heisei

>Heard they were autists, but no details
Then go post this on /m/ because they are obsessed with the site. Or just look up any of their Toho Kingdom hateboner threads in some archive, they go on for several hundred posts.

Anyway, in short, they are aggressively autistic, tend to have a "don't you dare like what I don't like" attitude, and the entire forum just has this uneasy atmosphere. Also, they apparently like to track down users they don't like on other sites and keep bugging them.

Even if I love this scene
m.youtube.com/watch?v=nYT3TdYYHkU

Fucking retards

youtube.com/watch?v=bYzc3aMI-y4

Love this scene, there's some theory that the guy basically suicide by Godzilla, because he's the one responsible for it, sort of honor kind of thing

Mothra was shit for a lot of reasons. It wasn't even meant to be a Godzilla movie, they just threw him into what was essentially a pre-written script. And all that forced environmentalism and spontaneous philosophizing about the crimes of real-estate development are just fucking embarrassing.

Battra's pretty cool, they should have another go at him.

tnx doodz

I think this movie was supposed to be Mothra vs Bagan

Shame Bagan never fought Godzilla in the Heisei series

What about a continuation of this line of films? Pick up with the adventures of the now adult Godzilla Junior. I always thought it would be cool to see an abandoned Tokyo. Something similar to the setting of Coppelion. Pic related.

Problems with this I see are:
- Picking up an old timeline. Then again, belated sequels are popular now.
- How to make Godzilla an actual threat and tell interesting stories in a universe where MechaGodzilla, Moguera, and Super X-III exist.

>Mothra gets the worst Heisei movies, even her trilogy
>somehow gets God tier monsters like Battra, death Ghidorah, and deghara
>they'll never be used again

will we ever get bagan?

>why didn't you save me, Sup Forums?

Battra is so badass. I loved him when I was a little kid
damn I really need to rewatch all the old Godzilla movies
Are they up on netflix or anything?

How dare you forget Grand King Ghidorah, aka the best Ghidorah ?

But seriously, Toho made Mothra movies because she's a popular monster among women.

That's also why we get less and less new monsters, because the only movies that were box office hits (or at least, didn't bomb) were the one with popular monsters like Ghidorah
I was happy to have new monsters in G2014, but the MUTO design is really lazy

this guy has truly the potential to be Godzilla arch nemesis

But it wouldn't be the first time they picked an unused concept for a movie, even if he appears in a comic I would be happy

KissAsian.com

>h-help me Sup Forums

>please...

> Best Ghidorah
> Doesn't mention original Ghidorah
What?

I had that as a toy

Come on, most of the time he was mind controlled by aliens, like he was their bitch or something

GKG is the fucking reason the dinosaurs went extinct

>original Ghidorah
>not the rainbow-winged Ghidorah from before they painted him gold.

Unrelated, but I spat out a broken tooth piece while reading this thread. Was hoping it'd last longer or break in a more convenient spot. I blame Toho Kingdom.

Fresh off the boat, from reddit, kid? heh I remember when I was just like you. Braindead. Lemme give you a tip so you can make it in this cyber sanctuary: never make jokes like that. You got no reputation here, you got no name, you got jackshit here. It's survival of the fittest and you ain't gonna survive long on Sup Forums by saying stupid jokes that your little hugbox cuntsucking reddit friends would upboat. None of that here. You don't upboat. You don't downboat. This ain't reddit, kid. This is Sup Forums. We have REAL intellectual discussion, something I don't think you're all that familiar with. You don't like it, you can hit the bricks on over to imgur, you daily show watching son of a bitch. I hope you don't tho. I hope you stay here and learn our ways. Things are different here, unlike any other place that the light of internet pop culture reaches. You can be anything here. Me ? heh, I'm a judge.. this place.... this place has a lot to offer... heh you'll see, kid . . . that is if you can handle it.

Nice meme my friend

*slow claps*
*steps out of the shadows*
Heh... not bad, kid. Not bad at all. Your meme, I mean. It's not bad. A good first attempt. It's plenty dank... I can tell it's got some thought behind it... lots of quotable material...
But memeing isn't all sunshine and rainbows, kid. You're skilled... that much I can tell. But do you have what it takes to be a Memester? To join those esteemed meme ranks? To call yourself a member of the Ruseman's Corps? Memeing takes talent, that much is true. But more than that it takes heart. The world-class Memesters - I mean the big guys, like Johnny Hammersticks and Billy Kuahana - they're out there day and night, burning the midnight meme-oil, working tirelessly to craft that next big meme.
And you know what, kid? 99 times out of a hundred, that new meme fails. Someone dismisses it as bait, or says it's "tryhard," or ignores it as they copy/paste the latest shitpost copypasta dreamt up by those sorry excuses for cut-rate memers over at reddit. The Meme Game is rough, kid, and I don't just mean the one you just lost :^). It's a rough business, and for every artisan meme you craft in your meme bakery, some cocksucker at 9gag has a picture of a duck or some shit that a million different Johnny No-Names will attach a milion different captions to. Chin up, kid. Don't get all mopey on me. You've got skill. You've got talent. You just need to show your drive.

Don't dream user, Heisei is buried forever

Maybe with comics or video game, but I think there's plenty of new stuff to look forward to, Heisei ending was perfect on it's own

He had that iconic voice like a bell and the most energy compared to other incarnations. And he destroyed all life on Mars/Venus. How can other Ghidorahs compete?

Not getting gang raped by all Godzilla, Anguirus, Gorosaurus and Minya

Never said I didn't like it, but GKG is the best design, period

Always wanted to get these on High QUality Print.

Any ideas where to find them?

Look on ebay, maybe some asia import sites

Or find high res pictures and print them

At least it took multiple monsters to bring him down. Heisei Ghidorahs got beat by both a Godzilla and Mothra fighting on their own. Twice in one movie for the first one. How the mighty have fallen.

>in his first movie it takes 3 monsters to beat him
>by GMK he loses with Mothra

Just

It's more entertaining to have Godzilla and KG in 1vs1

> More entertaining to have Godzilla and KG 1vs1
> Pic related is literally the best fight in the franchise.
Lol, how?

Best fight in the franchise was King Kong vs Godzilla

>Pic related is literally the best fight in the franchise.
That's not Godzilla vs. Titanosaurs and Mechagodzilla.

That's a good fight, but it's no this
m.youtube.com/watch?v=HnDE7bL90Mk
Or this
m.youtube.com/watch?v=thPymMTVatI

Man I would love to see Titanosaurus again

He has joined Biollante, Battra, Varan, and the other forgotten monsters. May they rest in peace.

Biollante is like SpaceG, very specific origin that is hard to do except if they change everything

Varan is an unknown monster, and they wanted to use it in GMK

Battra can still appears in Mothra material

Well, yeah. I'm sure they're being used somewhere. Some more than others.Had movies in mind when I mentioned being forgotten monsters.

Good lord these are beautiful. Pieces of art.

Will Rodan ever come back? I remember him more in the original than the godzilla movies

...

That argument and the whole "Man that doctor is crazy with thinking there's a dinosaur underwater!" are the two worst parts of the old MechaGodzilla movies.

Maybe because he looked the best in his debut film? He looked goofy in the early Godzilla films and then either stiff or overdone in the more recent ones.

Eh, I think they're probably the most consistent but the Showa period has the Original and it has that campy goofiness that I love.
