Liszt

That feel when you were born too late to hear Liszt perform and also too late to bang tons of classical composer recitalist groupies

Listen to Jongen

I've finally listened to some of Boulez late interviews and they're soul crushing. He completely admits the failure of the last 100 years and takes a good portion of guilt on himself.

Imagine how bad he had to feel in his later years. He had one shot at this life and the only thing he managed to do is to inspire decades of music that he truly despises.

thats what he gets for making shitty music

congratulations, you have autism

Thanks man what an autistic thing to say

Faggot

wow

Sorry I have Tourette's, I hope you understand

Didn't he trash talk literally every composer? I imagine he was sad how niche music appreciation is. Or was he dissatisfied with the quality of his own work?

he trash talked a lot of composers, even the ones he liked, but that's just because he was a fairly critical personality.

for instance he trash-talked Berg romanticism, but at the same time considered his Op. 6 to be one of his favorite compositions of the 20th century, not to mention other pieces like Wozzeck.

here's a few of his favorite pieces for those curious:

wnyc.org/story/10-great-works-20th-century-pierre-boulezs-90th-birthday/

and I believe his favorite opera overall was either Pelleas or Parisfal, i don't remember.

In his late interviews he often complains about how uniform the last century has become.
There was a specific interview in wich he said that there is way much more difference between Beethoven and Wagner than there is between Schoenberg and anyone who came after him.
In his opinion the liberation from the tonality shackles resultedin obscurantist, unintelleggible music, where the whole personality of the composer is immediatly lost.

I'll link it to you later.

Piano vs Orchestral music

>What a ridiculous list. He has left out the composer whose music is more beloved and played in concert and on CDs and the radio than any other from the 20th century, Rachmaninoff.
Kek.

>picking one of his own works
What a memer he was

At least he was modest in his immodesty and put it last :^)

>Varese at no. 1
A memer indeed.

They weren't ranked

is there a link to an essential /classical/ reading list?

rosen

Well, they aren't in chronological order, so he at least thinks it's the first thing you should check out, which is kind of funny.

I tried your colgate toothpaste and it tasted like SHIT.

Damn, if he actually said that i'd gain a ton of respect for him

Grove

lol

Richter or Gilels?

strawpoll.me/12191585

yikes

Richter had more autism.
This is desert island disc material.

Music for this feel?

where's that contemporary piece of music that sounds like construction noises when you need it

Here it is. The opinion that he held in his later years was radically different from the one that he held in his '20s and '30s.

>Oh hey CLT if you're still here, why do you listen to Bix Beiderbecke if he's a dirty Mozart underrater?

Aren't we all, though?

Well whether or not he's under or overrated, I think we can agree that Mozart is definitely the most rated composer of all time.

Bix also liked Debussy. For a man we apparently don't know much about there seems to be quite a lot of info on the man.
Also who's the Nick LaRocca of classical?

looks like a visual kei album cover

Is he overrated or over rated?

What/s that lol? I've never in my life heard of whatever that is.

leave

Why is it so praised?

really makes you think...

Why is he so kawai lads?

>Also who's the Nick LaRocca of classical?
I don't know but it has comedic potential.

>having to ask
FPTMIU

Serious? It's fucking Richter, man.

That's still not an argument

Man I admire the dedication of the Petzposter(s).

How low can a violin physically play? I know G is the lowest note in standard tunings but Haydn once had them tune that string down to F, so what's the lowest note you could do that with?

you could remove the string from the instrument and pluck it for a C#-6

No, just a question

What blogs do you frequent, guys?

takimag

I'm thinking about starting a composition degree next year. I'm currently a decent pianist (I'm 18 and have already won a few minor competitions, nothing spectacular) and honestly I'm pretty sure that when it comes to improvisation I'm an actual genius.
That said, all my istincts bring me to play tonally. Can I be taken seriously by the academia while composing exclusively tonally?

Life is too short not to play just what you feel.

Loaded question

I know, that's why I was asking specifically about what kind of mindset is currently driving academia.
As a complete outsider I honestly don't know what the average composer will think about me if I start writing piano sonatas.
I've tried to ask it to my composition teacher a few times and he flat out refused to answer me.

meetinginmusic, odeonmusic

I don't know anything about piano performance on a professional level, but you can probably get an idea for what's in vogue by checking out what people are buying right now.

All right, how about: are there many pianists who have played youtube.com/watch?v=4Gv2E1qxa9w better?

thank you

*yawns during the performance*

Not many famous pianists have recorded that piece, considering Handel isn't part of the standard piano repertoire. Way to stray away from the original discussion though.

Shut the fuck up you dumb faggot

I'm enjoying Manuel de Falla a lot lately

What would be a string quartet that sounds as harmonies sliding into others, instead of having a strong pulse (like a piano song).

an example would be this OST where the violin takes the melody an all other instruments do the harmony at one point

youtube.com/watch?v=CTJ3HAsI-Qc

sorry for being pleb

Prefer the Prelude and Fugue on B-A-C-H but this ones pretty GOAT too

Try quartets by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert

Any specifics? I tried Haydn earlier today, but it sounded too much like something of his I'd play on the piano.

I hate going out looking for a certain musical characteristic or feel beause I never find it right out.

Schubert no. 15

How can I go to the next level if I'm a pleb who only likes medieval music (e.g. Dufay, ars nova, ars subtilior), minimalism and the occasional impressionist or romantic piece when it comes to classical ?

I also don't get why Beethoven is always hailed as the greatest composer of all-time, and I'm not fond of the lack of emphasis on rhythm in music from the renaissance to the serialists, since the results often fails to grab my attention. How do I stop being such a "popularist" ?

If you have trouble concentrating, take up meditation.

thanks based musicians

But this is more like it

Do you play anything? Some stuff are easier to get if you play.

Like how playing Beethoven will force you to feel the emotions in his music in order to express it yourself.
