I really only like free jazz, fusion, and avant-garde jazz
Am I alone?

uh... that's a decent % of it

oh I see
does anyone have recommendations similar to pic related?

youtube.com/watch?v=kCpF_cofkII

>don't post new-school stuff
yeah, cool. let's just keep posting the same 8 jazz albums

...

Not similar to Daikanjyo at all, but still might be up your fancy.

youtube.com/watch?v=WpOLIQNuekc

listened to this album for the first time today
never knew such a masterpiece existed

can i get recs for similar stuff?

Try this and let me know, especially Birdland (first track)

youtube.com/watch?v=jp-cwoZWoGA

haha i have a copy of this (and other albums of theirs) already

i appreciate it though!

Been listening to a lot of Mingus lately.

youtu.be/C4rqh_64R7Y?t=23m35s

Love this little bit here with Dolphy.

Not even 5 minutes in and I can tell this is my shit
thank you for this rec

...

What if I'm listening to new school stuff that's actually good jazz?

...

Then you'd either be lying or have bad taste

...

...

standard sonny rollins

i guess you could call it new age but im about to study with the bassist and he just turned 65. plus its fucking good.

I bet William Parker is terrible to take lessons from.

idk what that nippon seoul shit is but heres some free jazz

i havent taken one yet but after sharing cake with him backstage for his birthday this past weekend i didnt get the impression i wouldntnt enjoy studying with him. what makes you say that?

another free tenor bass drum trio album thats great.

Can everybody give me their 2017 jazz recommendations so far?

OP said we're not allowed to post new school jazz in here. Start a new thread and let's make it better than this shitty one.

I just posted 5 fantastic albums, how is this a bad thread?

Yeah cool, another thread where people vapidly post album covers. Just what this board needed.

Listen to this album and then stuff your shitty opinions in your ass

yes

I enjoy plenty of hard bop but those genres are def my favs and the ones I explore more than any other jazz sub genres.

this is great

...

Do any of you actually watch jazz live? I want to but would feel awkward as fuck.

there, if you're new to jazz and you have any taste, then this post should be life changing

yeah... why feel awkward?

Wouldn't be able to drag a friend along and I have no idea what kind of atmosphere it would be

I have once. It was incredible. Small club, only 30 or so people in the audience. Show was a sextet playing a tribute to Ornette Coleman

Going to concerts is the most liberating thing ever. 10/10 recommend. Just don't tell your family, they'll think you have no friends :^)

*Going to concerts alone

eh. don't worry about going alone. and just look up the act/club beforehand so you know what you're in for. usually it's just cover fee and 1 or 2 drink minimum. dress like you're going out to a higher end bar

Jazz concerts aren't really like going to a rock or rap concert or something.

Usually there's a bar where you can sit and stare into your drink if you want. There will probably be plenty of other people there by themselves too (if there are people there at all) and if you want you can probably find a stranger to talk to, or you can usually just sit and listen in solitude if you want.

what's your guys favorite bop record of this decade? taking any recs

for frame of reference my fave albums right now are
wayne shorter - adam's apple
art blakey - a night in tunisia
max roach - percussion bitter sweet

I hear live jazz probably about 3 times a week. Its great man, go to clubs or concerts and shit. Itll make you happier.

check this

cheers m8 will listen to it

youtube.com/watch?v=krDxhnaKD7Q
Why is this allowed?

...

literally never heard this in a recording despite its meme status

Think of it as the Wilhelm scream of jazz and swing music.

...

...

youtube.com/watch?v=HqusdbWDAIg

Did Chick Corea ever make a better album?

youtube.com/watch?v=vFw-_LpZbTw

I strongly believe all humans should be administered the Ludovico technique with this album

youtube.com/watch?v=Csz0M_o_h0U

What are the sources for all of these?

Bump.

What does posting covers of Jazz albums accomplish? Write about the albums you fucks. Start a discussion.

I wonder what it would've been like to fuck young Carla Bley / Annette Peacock. Damn.

what should I see, /jazz/ ? already booked a few but I'm not familiar with every one of these names

banlieuesbleues.org/22_festival_edition.php?offset=0

Anyone have any opinions on this? I don't listen to much new jazz but this felt old school, no unnecessary rock influences and lots of afro-inspired percussion. The drumming in particular is fucking spectacular and I liked the way vocals were used to sparingly.

the album is mixed horribly but other than that it was pretty decent. vocals should have been used more probably

been looking for a download of this
anyone?

Come on, newfriend. Use soulseek.

been listening to this a lot lately. got my attention because ed blackwell is great and its a solid little trio. think i got it from the archive so hit it.

wont let me make an acccount?

have you heard this one ? there's Holland on it too and some talented people around him

Here you go, then.

>Don Cherry & Terry Riley - Köln February 23, 1975
do you know other similar albums blending (free)jazz & minimalism?
youtu.be/24ByyXlyIrs

thank you. i think i figured it out but downloaded yours. been putting off finally learning how to use soulseek for awhile
holy shit gotta check this out. cherry was the man.

Going to see these tonight
youtube.com/watch?v=DHPoQ26t6M8

I really enjoyed the Dinosaur album - lots of cool stuff on the Edition Records label these days

No problem.

Use it. It's a no-brainer.

>cherry was the man

have you checked this one out ?

you have horrible fucking taste Jesus Christ

bump

did you listen to it because it was on that Tom Waits' favorite albums list that someone posted yesterday?

I prefer Lounge Lizards later work myself
youtube.com/watch?v=0NdU11z1HXE

John Lurie is cool, I like his music, his painting, his acting and his fishing show

any love for Eric Kloss ? I think he's pretty underrated

bump !

Quincy Jones and Bill Cosby Original sessions 1969, now we talkin

will Quincy Jones get a sticky when he dies

never heard of him before, but I'll give him a listen because he's playing with some quality sidemen

apparently he is also "hard to even find on Soulseek" -level obscure, but Essence is on YouTube. Sounds pretty good so far.

youtube.com/watch?v=FHhva-XUOKw

yes, those are some decent choices user....

HOWEVER

his LPs aren't very expensive if you can't download them

yeah, looks like one of those guys whose stuff is pretty cool and cheap to pick on on original vinyl

kind of reminds me of John Klemmer in that sense

youtube.com/watch?v=QL5a2IdLc-4

I saw that lineup live some months ago
fucking god tier
not the guitar tho'

Good album.

Nah, found it in a sharethread like 2 years ago.

john lurie rules. his fishing show is the comfiest thing ive seen and his music is the best.he has a great scope of humor, warmth, absurdity, mysticism and tranquility in everything he does.
i dont listen to much jazz but i would be grateful for any recs that have a similar feeling to his work

some of Marc Ribot's earlier work is similar, for me at least although Ribot is a more serious avant-garde type - he played in Lounge Lizards for a while, too. Check out Requiem for What's His Name

...

Anymore eastern influenced stuff?

heard it but thank u.
that album and rootless compositions is full of top lols
