This thread is for the discussion of the language, culture, travel, daily life, etc. of Japan. Let's tark at randam in Japanese and English. Take it easy!
How many months does it take to get to a native level from scratch?
Colton Robinson
>native level A lot, I suppose.
Elijah Miller
>native level A decade at least, if I had to take a guess. Depends on the environment, though. If you live and work in Japan, you'd get there a lot faster for sure.
Cameron Miller
>native level >in months

kanji makes me want to cry but then there's always rikai-kun and rikai-chan to help

unless you're retarded of course

People make efforts in learning a foreign language a lot more than you think.
Gavin Turner
peru? where are you peru? are you ok peru?
peru?
Dylan Perry
the Japanese are retarded
Nolan Wright
Well, do it then.
Joshua Martinez
With that kind of attitude, no Japanese would help you improve your Japanese. It would take you for ever to master Japanese even if you live in Japan.
Matthew Price
今気づいたけど、retarded って言葉を繰り返し使うとバカっぽいね(´・ω・`)

What's the point in spending more than a decade to learn Japanese? To watch anime and read manga?
Matthew Stewart
to kill time
Christian Ward
why kill time if we live only once? I find French and Spanish a lot more useful at that
Connor Wood
一回だけでも使うと明らかにふざけてないならだいぶ頭悪いように見えるんだよなぁ(´_ゝ`)
Maybe you work or want to work in a language-related industry like translation or interpretation?
Henry Diaz
So you only do stuff that's useful, yeah? Why are you wasting your time on Sup Forums then?
Logan Perez
Well then you had better learn those, if you have some time to post such a shit post.
Carter Lee
Would it be better to minor in Buisness or Japanese?
Austin Rogers
Unlike most European languages (minus Spanish) Japanese is spoken as an only language most of the time. If you go to France or Germany or Sweden or wherever most people speak English anyways, but if you go to Japan most people only have very basic English skills despite it being taught in schools. Japan also has a very large cultural output so even if you don't care about anime/manga there's still very large quantities of literature, movies, music, etc to make use of your Japanese ability with.
I'd agree that Spanish is more useful overall probably due to the number of speakers, but Japanese is actually up there for one of the more useful languages to learn I think (assuming you start with English).
Oliver Nguyen
spanish is useless as hell. t. fluent in spanish
German is far more relevant for work.
Dylan Clark
If you don't see the point in it, then don't do it. If you're looking to learn a useful language, then there are plenty of better options. Japanese is a hard language that will need a lot of motivation in order to put in the necessary hours, so if you don't have a passion for it it'll be quite the uphill battle. >To watch anime and read manga? You don't need to be at a native's level to enjoy anime and manga, so you wouldn't need to spend over a decade to do so.
Caleb Jackson
the only novel i read in japanese were from yoshimoto banana lol... everything else, couldn't be bothered enough :(
Brandon Reyes

>If you go to France or Germany or Sweden or wherever most people speak English anyways so you're implying that more than 50 percent of either Spanish or French population can speak English?

Obviously not Spanish since I specifically said "except Spanish" earlier in the post, and I suppose I don't know the exact number of French people that speak English but I assume it's at least like a third of them (and probably a lot more if you're in a city).

From what I know, very few can speak a good English in France.
