Everyone has different learning styles. Like said, the pace was slow for them.
However I took classes for a couple of years and they helped me massively.
Personally, I didn't learn a single shit of English when I was at middle and high school. Reading and searching the meaning of the words and grammar structure by myself gave me a big boost in my skills, though.
What about the learning method? What do I need to learn "in the book" before starting to learn how to talk and listen in Japanese?
I was thinking about learning kana and some common kanji, a little of grammar and then just stick into watching jap content with subtitles. It's something similar to what I did with eigo and it worked.
