Waddy Tudor Jones is one of the better creative minds currently producing work. If you want I can give you a rundown and offer you the Zef pill.
You're not wrong and that isn't a bad thing.

I can't take them seriously with their fake personas

you're really missing the point of their whole act I think
the fake personas are the point, it's performance art
look up watkin tudor jones previous projects, they have done it before and he has a very interesting personal philosophy about the way we project and present ourselves to others
he's actually very intelligent

Oh ok, I like their music now.

>If you want I can give you a rundown
Sure, I made the thread becuase I wanted to know if there was more to these people than their stage personas

They have some dank shitposts

Waddy has had multiple projects that are all a blend of music and performance art. Each one deals with the weight of identity and how a person can shape it in any way they desire through self control and force of will. He started out in the south african hip hop scene working with various producers and fronting The Original Evergreen. He later started perfoming as Max Normal who was a shoddy motivational speaker that would give advice about confidence while obviously being unable to apply it towards his own life.
He then embarked on a massive conceptual record with some of his early collaborators as The Constructus Coproration and released The Ziggurat. This album portrays a vast narrative set inside of an archology (an entire city as a single building) with a staggering cast of characters all voiced by Waddy, who is surprisingly skilled at mimicry and voice acting.
After this, he rebooted the character of Max Normal in MaxNormal.tv with a new line up. Here we have Yolandi introduced as a sort of street urchin tag along and two associates of "Max" who would later alternate being DJ HiTek for interviews in the early stages of Die Antwoord. Waddy knew that MaxNormal.TV wouldn't be a huge success so he used it as a transitional piece while he conceived Die Antwoord and littered the project with references to his later endeavors.
Originally Die Antwoord was intended to start out as a film, however Waddy didn't have either the financial means or clout to make this happen so instead dived into the music and sprinkled bits of the narrative into it.
As Die Antwoord entered the scene, Neil Blomkamp, a long time fan, was gaining attention with district 9. Blomkamp offered Waddy, now Ninja: the recently released from prison Zef gangster, the lead role in Elysium. Waddy turned down the role since he would have then become known as an actor rather than the front man of Die Antwoord, which was a project he had placed all of his creative energy into.

Once Tension was released on a global market to a fair bit of success he felt comfortable enough with how well established the Die Antwoord brand was that agreed to work with Blomkamp on Chappie and played himself as Ninja alongside Yolandi, also as herself.
They've reached a point that the original Die Antwoord film can possibly be made soon amd there are rumors that the film would link the Constructus Coproration narrative with that of Die Antwoord and possibly even Max Normal. These are just rumors and I havent found any interviews where Waddy addresses that but I'd like to believe.
He's also very interested in eastern philosophy and there are strains of it that appear in his music. He is strongly against masturbation, believing in the "retention of essence" that many no-fap people also promote among other things.

Maxnormaltv was better

They were cool

jumped the shark by now

Stay woke

Damn it, I forgot to explain the Die Antwoord "concept"
So, Die Antwoord is essentially a cartoonish example of the "ghetto chic" image that popular culture has grown infatuated with. People are drawn to the big personalities behind hip-hop acts and so Waddy has created the loudest personality imaginable with the vibrant colors of the south african rave-rap scene. Zef comes from Zephyr which is a kind of nice car that is popular with the lower middle class over there. Essentially it's, "We're poor but we can be fashionable as well," just like how bitches are bad and boujee over on our side of the pond. They are taking the spectacle of decadence and debauchery that the consumers pay money to watch against the very gritty and real backdrop of South Africa's struggling ghettos in a way thatis uncomfortable because we don't want to see poverty portrayed in that way.
There ultimately is some irony behind it but Waddy has a genuine love for the music and a great deal of artistic vision.
Plus Yolandi can get it whenever, that haircut is terrible but she's hot as fuck.
It's really under appreciated.

I like them. I can't wait to see what they do next after their next album, which is apparently Die Antwoord's last album.

>the Zef pill
lol
it is true though he seems like a pretty talented guy, i listened through his whole back catalog way back when they first got popular
he's a little pretentious honestly, and i don't think he's really ever been able to nail down something that really felt "perfect" to me, but the guy is a real genius. always been ahead of the curve (especially for someone living in fucking south africa) but i think has never really managed to throw himself on top of it and it seems like that's been a major source of frustration for him. real character

>always been ahead of the curve (especially for someone living in fucking south africa)
nah, south africa is great with electronic music

BABIES ON FIRE

Fucking terrible but they are le ironic about it lmao so it's ok.

Mixed feelings. On one hand they have the opportunity to mess things up with anarchy on the other they're tedious try hards

Talented people, love their current style, great 3 albums followed up by suprisingly weak 4th, it seems that they should move on beyond die antwoord already, so I'm kinda worried for the 5th and final album of this project. Or maybe it's the constant touring that has taken its toil on them or some personal stuff who knows.
tl;dr: magnificent bastards.
