Waddy has had multiple projects that are all a blend of music and performance art. Each one deals with the weight of identity and how a person can shape it in any way they desire through self control and force of will. He started out in the south african hip hop scene working with various producers and fronting The Original Evergreen. He later started perfoming as Max Normal who was a shoddy motivational speaker that would give advice about confidence while obviously being unable to apply it towards his own life.
He then embarked on a massive conceptual record with some of his early collaborators as The Constructus Coproration and released The Ziggurat. This album portrays a vast narrative set inside of an archology (an entire city as a single building) with a staggering cast of characters all voiced by Waddy, who is surprisingly skilled at mimicry and voice acting.
After this, he rebooted the character of Max Normal in MaxNormal.tv with a new line up. Here we have Yolandi introduced as a sort of street urchin tag along and two associates of "Max" who would later alternate being DJ HiTek for interviews in the early stages of Die Antwoord. Waddy knew that MaxNormal.TV wouldn't be a huge success so he used it as a transitional piece while he conceived Die Antwoord and littered the project with references to his later endeavors.
Originally Die Antwoord was intended to start out as a film, however Waddy didn't have either the financial means or clout to make this happen so instead dived into the music and sprinkled bits of the narrative into it.
As Die Antwoord entered the scene, Neil Blomkamp, a long time fan, was gaining attention with district 9. Blomkamp offered Waddy, now Ninja: the recently released from prison Zef gangster, the lead role in Elysium. Waddy turned down the role since he would have then become known as an actor rather than the front man of Die Antwoord, which was a project he had placed all of his creative energy into.
Once Tension was released on a global market to a fair bit of success he felt comfortable enough with how well established the Die Antwoord brand was that agreed to work with Blomkamp on Chappie and played himself as Ninja alongside Yolandi, also as herself.
They've reached a point that the original Die Antwoord film can possibly be made soon amd there are rumors that the film would link the Constructus Coproration narrative with that of Die Antwoord and possibly even Max Normal. These are just rumors and I havent found any interviews where Waddy addresses that but I'd like to believe.
He's also very interested in eastern philosophy and there are strains of it that appear in his music. He is strongly against masturbation, believing in the "retention of essence" that many no-fap people also promote among other things.
