It was a piece of shit but I'm shocked to see fans of the original saying it went too far and they hated it as a result because the first one was just as much of a piece of shit.
Twists and motivations that don't make any sense. Magic tricks that require editing, camera tricks, bad writing or CGI to work etc.
It was The Illusionist "cgi growing orange plant turns out to somehow be created using gears and machines according to a blueprint" level.
It's movies like this which just fuck up the art of magic. Prestige is one of the only movies I've seen which actually handled it well.
