Great horror

Any hardcore horror fans got good recommendations for great horror films, especially obscure ones? After burning through all the popular stuff, I've enjoyed discovering hidden masterpieces, but they're so hard to find.

I've seen (and highly recommend) Possession, Angst, Messiah of Evil, Last House on Dead End Street and The Mutilator, and I'm looking for more.

The Loreley's Grasp (1974)

Anyone see Lights Out yet? Worth a watch? I'm hoping it's all about atmospheric dread rather than jump scares.

Looks right up my alley. I'm getting into Spanish horror at the moment, actually, but I wasn't aware of this. Appreciate the recommendation.

>I'm hoping it's all about atmospheric dread rather than jump scares.
I haven't seen it but I doubt it'll be all about atmospheric dread.

I didn't have high hopes for it since based on the trailer it looks like they just re-use the same gag over and over for scares, but it's getting some positive reviews so I'm holding out hope it'll be a pleasant surprise.

Yeah, I'm not banking on it, but The Witch offers hope that horror isn't yet completely neutered.

Horror on Snape Island a.k.a. Tower of Evil (1972)

Looks like exactly the kind of obscure, crazy shit I was hoping to get from this thread. Can't wait to check it out.

...

Der Fan (1982)

This one's kinda been on my radar for a while. Glad you reminded me, I'll have to check it out for sure now. Here's hoping it's as fucked as the premise promises.

This reveal was handled so much better in the books.

Overall, I think 6 is the worst entry in the film series. 5 is a bit of a mess as well, but it at least has Gary Oldman's charisma going for it.

6 is one of the best easily

the climax of the film was great

It's been a while since I saw any of em. I still go with 2 as my personal favorite, if only for the nostalgia, but I think 3, 4, and 7 are good as well.

3 7.1 6 are my top 3

goblet imo is garbage due to the directing but i still enjoy it

>the climax of the film was great
I don't disagree, but the backstory of Snapes mother having the Prnice surname etc. in the book gave the identity of the HBP so much more meaning and importance. Here it's almost a throwaway reveal like Jon being a Targaryen when most showfags know fuck all about them

>Overall, I think 6 is the worst entry in the film series.
I agree, I started losing interest in them around there, came back for the last two.

I've come to appreciate Goblet more over the years for its tight script. I think the mystery plot is handled well. Although it's probably the least "fun" entry in the series.

stop talking about the book. the film works on its own as it should be judged since its a different medium, it cant be like the books and please stop talking about game of thrones

6 7 8 work as a really good trilogy back to back

If you like two the most here you go man

The batshit directing, and pacing and dull cinematography save the last third put it down for me but i have grown to like it more. the only reason the script is good is because the material was so good

to add the yates films are centered on harry, the meaning in hbp mostly comes from him and dumbeldore

>stop talking about the book
>and please stop talking about game of thrones

ha ha!
No.
I appreciate the differences between book and film or even books and tv, I enjoy new ways to experience a familiar story.
All I'm saying is that the more visual mediums dropped the ball on these two occasions.

They also fucked up the ending to Dreamcatcher, fixed the pacing of WANTED but raped the source material into bland nothingness and improved the climax of The Mist.

That grid reminds me I really should see the films on Blu-Ray someday. I can see it being pretty jarring after years of ABC Family's Harry Potter Weekend.

I gotchu. I just really like the vibe from halfblood prince. To me the comedy and drama melds. Its got a really nice tone and atmosphere almost dreamlike and dreary, I thought it was a good adaptation confidently directly and shot

You should they look great on bluray. The aspect ratio when they are on tv annoys me, because the picture looks much better

Triangle

Deranged (1974)
Dr Butcher M.D.

>I gotchu. I just really like the vibe from halfblood prince.
Your words have moved me, my anonymous brother. Maybe it's time I gave this movie another chance.

I'm actually a little surprised I've never heard of this one at all.

I pre-ordered Dr. Butcher on Blu the day it went on sale. I'm hyped, assuming the reviews didn't lie about its batshit insanity.

Deranged looks good as well. If it's in any way associated with Bob Clark it has potential to be GOAT.

Thanks for the recs, guys.

Watch it in top quality my man

sleep tight, but kind of psychological horror

I've seen some buzz about this one recently. I think I'll give it a look. It's got potential.

Blind Beast (1969)

This looks fucking dope. Thanks man.

Absentia 2011

BrainDead, it's also called Dead Alive.

High Tension is good, the pacing is kinda bad but it is worth it

Inhuman Resources (REDD INC)

anyone know if this movie is good?
it looks like either a meme or a hidden gem, so i am not sure.

I skipped through most of it but it doesn't look very good. If you're on cinemageddon and like b movies you'd probably like it though I suppose.

Martyrs is better

Antiviral
Dogtooth
The nice combo of horror + "wtf".

If you liked Possession, you should check out some of Żuławski's other films like Third Part Of The Night and The Devil.
If you're into classic horror, The Innocents and Eyes Without a Face are obvious go-tos. The former is especially great. It's highly complex, with lots of subtext, and imo still holds up today in terms of spookiness factor.
The Devils (1971), while not exactly horror, is pretty fucking messed up. It's also a 10/10 masterpiece. Altered States by the same director is also pretty great.
Nicolas Roeg's Don't Look Now is a great slow paced psychological horror clusterfuck.
If you haven't already, Dario Argento.
If you like David Lynch, he's pretty good at making you feel uneasy. Inland Empire is the best example for this, but Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive and Lost Highway have their spooky moments too.
