Why don't directors edit their own films ?

why don't directors edit their own films ?

because they have other tasks to attend to

they're too hipster to do that

They probably give detailed instructions and have the last word on everything. It is not like they give the raw footage to any editor and let him do whatever.

Because editing is a lot of hard work and no one gives a shit about who edited a movie.

A lot of em oversee the process but don't actually physically cut the film themselves. Why put in the time/effort when you can just let a professional do it and tell them what works and what doesn't?

I do.

I do, too, but I wish I didn't. Editing is hell.

the extra money? the potential for another award?

There's also the fact that editors are professionals dedicated to the process. Even great directors benefit from using skilled editors. It's an art in itself.

Yeah its tedious as hell but I'd rather do it than have someone else do it. The real pain in the ass is editing sound.

They do, retard. Especially QT.
But they do it through someone else. The Editor literally does the editing but the director is over their shoulder telling them what scenes/sounds should go where.

I think I'm in the same boat. At my level, I don't anyone who can do it as well as I can, so I don't have a choice unless I want an inferior product.

The part I hate the most, along with sound, is the sheer amount of footage you have to wade through and arrange in a coherent order, even for shorts.

I miss Sally Menke. Tarantino's films went to shit after she died.

Because I'm too busy hooking up with the actresses. Besides, why work when you can pay someone to do it?

Next question.

no they didnt.
theyve remained the same since kill bill.
her death seems to have had a placebo affect on you

What's going on here?

honestly being a director is easy as shit. they do fucking nothing quentin says he doesn't even operate a camera anymore he just sits and watches the scene lmao

On set is practically just babysitting and time management. The actual work comes in the pre-production and in overseeing the editing process.

memes aside,

Oh it shows, Quentin.

Cause its fuckin hard

DR. GOLDSTEIN, I'M KUK

because directors might get emotionally attached to a scene and not cut it whereas an editor knows better

Personally it felt more like managing a junior league football team than making films. Maybe big budget film is different I dunno...

Some films shouldn't be run entirely by one guy.

Movies are a collaborative process, each person specialises in a specific thing. When a Jack of all trades makes a film you get a mediocre film.

If Lucas edited his own films Star Wars would be complete ass

coen brothers edit

Yeah but they're the exception cause they're pretty much geniuses

his flicks were always shit

I love you Shane

bump

Why don't more directors write, edit, and act in their own films?

nah, I'm not gonna do it

cause they're fucking hacks

I've noticed a huge change after Menke died too. His movies have alway been long, but they've been tediously long since Inglorious Basterds.

Quit shitposting, Rodriguez. Make us another Spy Kids movie.

I would edit only for the potential to win 4 oscars and cement my legend status as a goat

This
Director is a meme position, its function is getting the praise and recognition of hundreds of hard working artists
