Can somebody explain to me why exactly the drinking age in every US state is 21 when:
a) it's not actually something the federal government has the power to set
b) literally nobody anyone anywhere supports this or follows it?

When I was a kid my family lived in Austria because of my dad's work, where the drinking age was 16. If you found a place that was lax about checking IDs and were somebody that bloomed early puberty-wise like me you could go to a bar and get piss drunk as early as 14. Most people there just do not give a fuck.

Is that what happened? When my dad told me stories about college he always mentioned that people would drive up from Virginia to DC to get wasted because the age was 18 and it was 21 in Virginia. It's a pretty crazy thing to think about for a 90s kid like me because I think most people are used to it being universal.

Yeah in my home state of CT it was 21 but in NY it was 18 so my parents generation all would go to NY.
Should be:
16 for cigarettes and alcohol energetics
18 for alcohol 6%+
I believe that Austria has the best drinking laws. 16 for beer & wine, 18 for hard stuff.
Personally I rarely had problems acquiring alcohol when I was underage, most waiters and cashiers don't give a fuck here.
Lad from work said when he was young he went on holiday to the US and he went with his mum into an off license or whatever you call them in the US, a shop that sells booze, and the woman on the till screamed at him to get out even though he was only 10 and with his mum.

Yes, some areas of the country are really fucking autistic about alcohol. Some counties are completely dry and don't allow any kind of alcohol to be served. I went to dinner last year with my 50 year old mom and she got carded when she ordered a glass of wine.
Also no kids allowed in bars anywhere, in the UK it's pretty normal to take your kids to the pub because it's literally a public house.
You can buy hard stuff at 16 in supermarkets, you just can't serve it to under-18s in bars, IIRC

what are the punishments for dui? here if you're under 24 you lose your license and get a big fine. if you are over 24 and very drunk you still lose a license and get a big fine.

Lel, I must say that I've been feeling dumber ever since I started browsing here. My grades have fallen too, but there are other causes for that as well. I still maintain that alcohol has had something to do with it, though. It seems too much of a coincidence that my intelligence peaked at 18 (legal drinking age here) and has been falling ever since.

Mex legal age is 18, and while is probably that you dont get too much problem getting booze at young age with the times at least in my city the regulations of alcohol sale have being getting enforced more and more and the ids to get intoc clubs are almost always mandatories (at least in nice clubs). Besides of that i know a lot of people that used to get smashed in bars since 14, i wish i was a cool guy back then.
