Most people never leave their states. Ever. Ultimately, people feel more connected to their state than their Federal government. I go to college out of state, and I feel like a complete outcast. That is, until I find another Delawarean.

I wont pretend Hollywood isn't cancer (don't know about Silicon Valley, haven't lived there), but I am hesitant to shoulder the blame on Californians themselves. Keep in mind those places are essentially global grease traps for any idiot who wants to get into show-business or tech. When you see a stereotypical "valley Girl" type who is money/celebrity obsessed, there's a strong chance that they weren't even born there and are expats from other states, it does rub off on locals but only the trashy ones. I guess that still technically makes them "californian" but I almost like to make a dividing line between homegrown culture which has a very heavy Hispanic/catholic and naturalist/ranchero undercurrent (even including much of L.A. and San Francisco), and the "glamour" places which are filled with transplants and rather disconnected from the common person.

Though I'm probably biased in this case being from California.

California gets talked about a lot because it's large, leftist and controls a fair chunk of the global media through Hollywood and Silicon Valley.

The land distances are immense and regional cultures exist in the north, the central valley, the sierras, the bay, the central coast, the south and the southern inland. The population size is also huge. Most of the infrastructure was designed back in the 50s and 60s by progressive republicans who planned everything to a t under the dual assumptions that growth would be modest and demographics would remain stable.

Since the 90s the state has become increasingly leftist in political orientation to the point where the state has taken over the role once held by New England as the standard bearer of progressive values. As a result Californian media tends to give an overly rosy view of itself because even basic self critique might call into question some political decisions which might undermine the state's political platform. Texas suffers from some of the same issues. Because there is no Texan Hollywood or Silicon Valley the disjunction between portrayal and reality seems less glaring.
