Why do people who shit on rap as a whole focus on content instead of the rhyme techniques? Isn't that like judging writers based on plot instead of prose (stuff plebs do)?

No, writers also get judged based on content.

If you wrote the most highly literate piece of smut nobody is going to think you're any good.

Because people who shit on rap as a whole have no intention or interest in not shitting on rap. Whatever point you wanted to make is moot because of that simple fact.

Nobody listens, we're too stuck in our bubble. Morality is useless because our lack of attention makes it so.

Pls help

People who shit on rap as a whole because of lyrical content haven't listened to enough rap to have a valuable opinion.

Do I seriously have to make a rap album to prove to you retards that it's not music?

Try reading Finnegans wake.

because people like you spam shitty hip hop artists like kl and that's all the pol fags hear, making them jump to the conclusion that le nigger music = bad

All that will prove is that you're a bad artist.

I said I was going to make a rap album, not a folk-punk album.

kek, rap's music though

Seriously, explain why it isn't music.

Yeah okay James Joyce had a lot more important things to say in his content than any of the rappers you're complaining people misunderstand.

Content and word choice is totally an acceptable thing to judge them on. Otherwise they should just be scatting the whole fucking thing or just making syllabic sounds.

most people here like doom

Because they're stupid.

Lolita is one of the most acclaimed novels of all time and features literal child sex. That's only the most blatant example.

Yeah, it features it. That's not what the book's about.

Nabokov had more to say it his content than just writing about fucking a kid. Content is very important. You don't just read words to read words.

>Nabokov had more to say it his content than just writing about fucking a kid. Content is very important. You don't just read words to read words.

Exactly. Just like rap which talks about murder and drug use shouldn't always be taken at face value and often features an important parodic or even critical subtext.

But that's still the lyrical content. Now you're just agreeing with me.

You should be arguing that people don't understand the content then. That's different than saying people shouldn't judge the content itself.

Some people on this board think that all rap is rhyming nigga with nigga

define music

No

>comparing Finnegans wake to well written smut and or rap music

if you make a good rap album with the intent of deconstructing the genre and to satirize or criticize ill admit the entire genre is a meme

>Lolita is one of the most acclaimed novels of all time and features literal child sex.
lolita has themes and messages that go far beyond child sex, rap however doesn't

cuz these retards are RACIST. they think no black man could possibly make more than monkey music. obviously they're wrong

>Sup Forums truly, actually, seriously, honest-to-god believes this

You're telling me that Illmatic doesn't have any themes or messages, or, as the OP asks, impressive rhyming, rhythm, or wordplay, and is solely about (insert pre-conceived notions of what black people sing about)?

>Just like rap which talks about murder and drug use shouldn't always be taken at face value and often features an important parodic or even critical subtext.
get the fuck out of here

>Always had the gas like I broke wind
>poppin pills is all we know

>I got codeine in my bladder

>In high school my teachers thought I was smoking stress.
>Didn't know my eyes low cause of genetic defects

>Why these crackers thinking that a nigga serve narcotics?
>Just because I'm living doesn't mean a nigga got it

>fuck the sugar act niggas out pushing crack
>and i lost my father figure because of that

the only time its talked about critically is purely on a surface level, like something involving the CIA pushing drugs back in the 80s or when they get profiled wrong or lose someone to it, other than that its purely for the image they like to cultivate as someone who recreationally uses or likes to sell drugs.

There are ironic rappers out there

>im everyone on Sup Forums
dont generalize faggot theres already two of you disagreeing. Also say something besides "i cant believe he said that"

never said illmatic or any rap music doesn't have themes or messages. Im saying that whenever there's a theme brought up in rap music it'll always be straightforward or simple in its execution

Kendrick has one talking bad about alcohol and binge drinking

literally addressed this

An odd thing to think when something like jazz exists.

How else should it be addressed then? Can you give me a song from another genre as an example?

I love the way it sounds, but man do I hate the lyrics.

Joyce himself said that he intentionally made his stories as confusing as possible so people would never stop analyzing them lol. He's literally the definition of style over substance.

>HOLY SHIT THAT DUDE CAN THINK OF A LOT OF WORDS THAT RHYME!!!

I like rap but it's legitimately the worst of the major genres

Rap classics pale in comparison the classics of other genres.

He also makes them sound good.

I'm with you. Kendrick is the equivalent of like a shred guitarist from the 80s, incredible technique without much creativity in the content.

Yeah, just impress all those rap haters with you extensive knowledge of MF Doom. That'll show em!

I think Kendrick in general is a big-picture kind of guy. His music is about the story or concept of his albums, the little skits he puts between songs to tie them together, the insane production values. It's like a Hollywood film, you don't get too mixed up with details like lyrics.
