Those are context blind idiots. Just because immigrants from the West Indies and Jamaica brought Skinhead Reggae with them doesn't mean the "Spirit of '69" was some big anti-racist paradise. Just ask any Pakistani or Indian shopkeeper. Also, plenty of black skinheads got hostile with white ones, especially when Punk started becoming more popular.

Yes, there were left-wing skinheads, but at first, the subculture wasn't politically connected to anything. Some were from Conservative families whereas others voted Labour. It was a youth movement for working class hard mods who got a little soulful from the new swingin' sounds.

Once Garry Bushell came out with The Sounds and made Punk fashionable among white skinheads, the rest is history.

There were instances where white skinheads didn't need the National Front to inform their opinions. Angela Rippon's Bum was connected to the Anti-Paki League (yes, that was their name), years before Rock Against Communism started. Keep in mind, the YNF's original Punk Front was entirely localized to the community in Leeds.

Skinheads are British first and American second.

An ultra-primitive slice of first-wave RAC, the suitably named British Standard’s pagan plundering sets its own course, delivering exactly as promised; shoddy, raw skinhead Oi! which sounds surprisingly fresh in spite of its flaws. As my esteemed colleagues have mentioned, these Glasgow skinheads stood out from the pack as the earliest known RAC band to feature a Chelsea named Lorraine as lead singer. She later earned notoriety for performing live at National Front’s White Noise Club, but beyond that, little is known about the band’s first and only frontwoman who never made it beyond this demo.

The demo’s rawness can only be rivaled by Mayhem’s “Pure Fucking Armageddon,” but unlike the latter’s malevolence and evil caused by the budget constraints, the production simultaneously helps and hinders the musical experience. First-wave RAC was never a polished affair to begin with, but even here, the rough shod quality may test your pain threshold. The riffs here are your standard fare Oi! reminiscent of Peter & the Wolf or The Ovaltinees, but played a bit slower. The plucky bass sets the tone for the demo as the distant sound of drums and guitar gradually join the fray. Through this raw mess of instruments comes our vocalist, yapping some indistinct lyrics which, against the odds, still sound quite fierce before a male joins on the chorus here and there. On occasion, the guitarist plays a shoddy solo. Only a couple tracks outstay their welcome while the rest deliver on their promise. The good tracks here would later be rerecorded for Celtic Connections, receiving the proper studio treatment they deserved.

Gotta give credit where it's due. OP is a gentleman and a scholar

Thanks :3

No idea why mods bumplocked this. Really passive aggressive move on their part.

this, i enjoy anthropology regardless of political baggage. it's extremely rare to have well-written posts like these

weird that this thread doesn't seem to be bumping anymore though...

I know my history of skinheads, thank you very much.

I merely pointed out that you're probably British, and U.S. skins, especially SHARP/RASH skins in the U.S. didn't participate in Paki bashing. In fact the SHARP/RASH usually bash the boneheads who go Paki bashing, or in my case basing anybody that either looks like they're from The Middle East, or Mexico/Central/South America. (I live in Trump country so that's who the boneheads over here have a go at)

Sorry for any misunderstanding.

At least you didn't post Hail The Woo Downs which probably would've been more appropriate since this IS a Skrewdriver thread. Not original, and not really that funny. (I like the bouncing cartoon head though, even if it is racist)

No shit, Sherlock.
Ever notice how all the U.S. Skinheads talk about the struggle of "The Working Class" yet seem to own every Oi!, Spirit of 69, Ska, or Soul/R&B album ever released? Or how they have new impeccable clean clothing? How much doe Dr. Marten boots cost? A bomber jacket? A Fred Perry, or Ben Sherman? Working class MY ASS! That stuff might be cheap in England/Europe, but that stuff cost LOTS of money in the U.S. and I never met one U.S. skinhead on welfare! I never met a skinhead in the U.S. that live in the projects (Council flats to all you Brits) or trailer parks. Just a bunch of rich kids slumming it and imitating a British/European youth subculture they don't understand because they didn't grow up in those kinds of living conditions. Talk to me when your father is laid off the assembly line, coal mine, or steel mill. Just saying'. Prove me wrong!
