Unnecessarily complex, there's absolutely no reason to keep dative, genitive or gender cases.

It's a pain in the ass but the short version is indirect objects and anything followed by certain prepositions (aus, außer, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu) is dative. For two way prepositions (über, in, an etc.) think of it this way; is there another object or are you just describing where something takes place?

"Ich werfe den Ostberliner wieder über die Mauer" - Accusative because over the wall is where I'm throwing [movement] him
"Der Ostberliner sitze auf der Mauer" - Dative because it's just describing where he's sitting. No movement
"Ich setze der Ostberliner auf die Mauer" - Accusative because it's where I'm sitting [movement] him.

Full disclosure, I'm American and half fluent in German.
