Good thread idea.

I'll start by recommending some movies most people haven't seen but are worth checking out:
Wristcutters: A Love Story
The Believer (2001)
Chan Is Missing
City of God
Drugstore Cowboy
Before Sunrise
Before Sunset
Before Midnight
Welcome to the Dollhouse
Happiness
Quills
K*Pax

Classic movies you must watch if you haven't seen them already:
On the Waterfront
Rocky (1976; the first in the series and still the greatest)
Network
Le Samourai
Double Indemnity
Pulp Fiction

You know those "Describe movies badly" threads? I'm the OP of like 90 percent of those. I'm also the guy people always say "Holy shit, I can't believe someone got that" to. So basically I'm kind of a film nerd and I like it when I get the chance to turn people on to good movies they wouldn't have otherwise seen.

By the way, if you're looking for a laundry list of big films, this is actually a 1 to 999 list that you can use to roll for a film. Haven't seen all of them but lots of these are pretty good.

Tbh you have to have a very high intelligence to understand movies 7.5/10 and beyond
Tldr; The Shining

Blind roll

...

...

dats mighty white of you

sure ya do... real intellect fest right here

Ghostbusters (1984) 7.8/10 IMDB

Definitely one of my top 3
Every shot is interesting visually
Brilliant plot and acting
Best Hitchcock movie ever isn't even Hitchcock
Plus that fucking zither music...

also the most beautiful female lead ever

...

jenny agutter nude, always worth a watch. Prefer Walkabout though

Remember when people used to just share A movie (as in one) and give other anons a chance? Always has to be one fanboy tryhard that acts like some kind of cinema expert.

...

I held off on listing a bunch of classics so that someone else can answer with their favorite. Considerate of me, no?

The Anderson Tapes
City of Lost Children
True Romance
Four Rooms
Shallow Grave
Rear Window

>Four Rooms
Kek, I stumped everyone with this for like three nights in a row in the describe movies badly thread.

Kinda underated

My nigga.

Roll

It's not your fault.

I like that movie too

I don't like movies.

...

>Le Samourai
You pretentious fuck.

Trips means we have to watch every movie this user posted.

Also, I never heard of the Anderson Tapes but Sean Connery and Christopher Walken sounds like a bad ass combo

I can see where you're coming from, but I have to push back a bit on this. I do detest truly pretentious fuckwits who post movies that THEY KNOW are boring but that they think make it sound like they have taste. Great examples of this would be Gus van Sant's more boring films, such as Last Days and Elephant. They're well made for what they are, I guess, but ultimately they're excruciatingly boring and their defenders will argue that that's basically the whole point. "They're supposed to be boring, user! They portray real lives in a realistic fashion!"

But yeah, Le Samourai is basically a summer action movie compared to those. It's not slow or artsy fartsy compared to truly pretentious drivel.

If I had to guess, I'd say fifty percent of the people who criticize a recommendation like that are pushing back against the suggestion of a foreign film made in the 70s on pure blind instinct.

There's nothing wrong with boring films. It's just that Le Samourai completely empty in both narrative and style. Whereas if you take an inherently boring director like Tarkovsky, his films actually say something in a stylistic and meaningful way.

>Le Samourai completely empty in both narrative and style
What can I say? I disagree with the style criticism quite a bit. I think it's one of the most stylish films I've ever seen, and I think it was well ahead of its time in many respects. As for the narrative criticism, I don't know that it is even that important for a film to say something meaningful so much as for them to entertain or move the audience. One of my favorite is as follows:

"As a general principle, I believe films are the wrong medium for fact. Fact belongs in print. Films are about emotions."
- Roger Ebert

Incidentally, Ebert agreed with me that Le Samourai is a great film. In fact, he rated it four stars out of four and selected it for his Great Movies book (not that I imagine you care in the slightest).

By the way, I am curious what your recommendations are for OP. Not that I wish to return fire and nitpick them—I have neither the time nor the inclination—I just genuinely wonder what you consider to be a great movie.

damn koreans can make some fucked up stories

So EVERYONE on Sup Forums only watches english speaking movies? Ra-ra-retards

we're not using the imdb rating as reference
shit is retard

I could list about 20 of my favorites. But I got yelled at for posting too many and then bitched at a second time for suggesting a foreign film (albeit, not on the grounds of it being foreign).

Some semi related movies in no particular order or ranking..
Timecrimes
Triangle
Arq
The Jacket
Looper
Time Lapse
The Man From Earth
Predestination

>The Man From Earth
There is a new sequel to this that just came out called The Man from Earth: Holocene. Same director, writer, and main actor. I hope it's as good as the first one.

i feel like you either just watched how i met your mother or the punisher and picked this up through dropped reference

Watch it at least once a year.

Jews will die?

Torture. Once, yeah.

Rolling for what to watch tonight

iwantsomegoodshittowatch

Fuck it, here's a list of foreign films worth watching. Suck a dick if you think this list is too long, too obscure, too pretentious. et cetera. No one cares.

In no particular order:
The Good Earth (1937)
Ran
Seom aka The Isle
Last Life in the Universe
Oldboy
Raise the Red Lantern
La Haine
La Femme Nikita
Ichi the Killer
Maborosi
Mephisto (1981)
House of Flying Daggers
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Le Grand Bleu (Foreign film, English language)
Man Bites Dog
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Cidade de Deus
The Woman in the Dunes
13 Assassins
The Seven Samurai
Irreversible
Battle Royale

If I specified a film's year, it's because it's a film with remakes or just has a common name.

I feel like people are posting movies they feel like they should like, rather than movies they do like.

The Dark Knight
Pocohontas
Terminator 2
Memento
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

Nolan Batman is shitty, and so is momento. Also inception. Nolan sucks megaton balls

Terminator 2 is a homogenous piece of scripted bullshit that sells a sexy 12 year old to america for 80 minutes

Interesting, I've never heard someone sexualize Edward Furlong.

Toni takitani

youtu.be/O62MowIcL0M

>I feel like people are posting movies they feel like they should like, rather than movies they do like.
Yes, that was my big criticism of pretentious bullshit in my earlier post about Gus van Sant's boring films. And I actually quite like him as a director, when he's not just hacking it up and coasting on his otherwise well deserved reputation as a great filmmaker.

Or maybe you're just projecting your own forbidden desires onto James Cameron.

>Nolan Batman is shitty, and so is momento. Also inception. Nolan sucks megaton balls

I bet you've never even heard of someone sexualizing Tony Montana, you retarded movie watcher

>La Haine

Best thing the French brought to this world

No, Hollywood totally must've picked him because he was short

Classic cinema

>you retarded movie watcher
>you'll never be a stylish, sophisticated movie watcher like me
>you probably don't even watch fine television like Rick and Morty

This one, the babysitter one and him as a space ranger...those were atrocious even for a wrestling fan.

I realize you live in your own world of pedophile fantasies but there is objectively nothing sexual about that photo, nor does the film at any point sexualize the character of John Connor. I'd tell you a cigar is just a cigar but it's more like trying to convince you a fax machine isn't a cigar which in turn isn't a sign that aliens are invading earth and we need to all wear tin foil hats. This is one of the most delusional, depraved, paranoid arguments I have ever seen. You are clearly accusing James Cameron of making a young boy into a sex object because that is exactly what you do internally every time you watch the film. And now you hallucinate that others do as well; that this thought is somehow the norm and anyone who strays from it is the weirdo.

Get help, sicko. You're not only a closet pedophile, you're autistic. You're worse than the fuckwit film critic who wrote a ten thousand word essay arguing that Donnie Darko is a meditation on incestuous fantasy.

No actors are completely attractive on accident. Especially when you make a whole movie about them.

It was bad. Herzog is bad at movies. Sorry if redditors on Sup Forums convinced you otherwise.

Nope. I've watched a lot of movies. If you knew what kind of movies these are you wouldn't call me tryhard. All these movies are goood.

Go put Shitshank on and keep on being clueless idiot

>mad because people can tell he has the gayness, which is a mental illness

Ugh. Why? It's like watching Mystic River or Million Dollar Baby... good films worth watching once. Too depressing

I'm not mad at all. I wanted your reaction. You seem a little bit angry. Maybe because you've realized that you know nothing about movies.

That fact you've seen Psycho from 1960, Shitshank and the old Indiana Jones movies doesn't make you an expert.

Papillon

That movie is very good. It should be on my list actually.

memento is very enjoyable.

What a sad, juvenile way to live. Borderline aspie territory.

Entire worldview? Wtf are you talking about? xD

I'll give you some english speaking ones so you also can watch a movie today, ok?
