Figured I should include some examples that are just the stem, to make it clear that there doesn't have to be an object.
狩り hunting (the verb is 狩る to hunt)
釣り fishing (the verb is 釣る to fish)
喜び joy (the verb is 喜ぶ to enjoy)
眠り slumber (the verb is 眠る to slumber)
And you can even have things like:
鳴き声 cry/call (of an animal, etc.), lit. crying voice (i.e., the voice with which a thing cries)
