Jones really was/is an amazing CGI job. I just think that the CG crew for the second and third movies were just uniquely spectacular; as you said, it really hasn't been "topped". Met, perhaps - but not topped.

I honestly ask myself this all the time. This was over a decade ago and somehow there just hasn't been anything since which looks this lifelike. The animation and lighting are both perfect.
It's not going to be possible to make anything with fur or hair look realistic for a long, long time. Like the bear in The Revenant, looked fake as hell and took me right out of it.
