the Soviets count their casualties different than the Germans. They include all men who spent time in a hospital due to sickness as casualties, while the Germans only count those wounded in action. Also, the Soviets count every tank that is immobilized for any amount of time as "knocked out", while the Germans only document losses if the entire tank is eviscerated. A Soviet tank blows out a track and is ready to go a day later? Listed as a loss. A German tank suffers several penetrations, is utterly crippled, and is in the garage for the next year? Not a loss. The Soviets would also count even lightly wounded men as casualties, while the Germans wouldn't.

It's more reliable to compare irrecoverable losses than just casualties. So, men killed, captured, or missing.

Germany was the undisputed greatest military power in WWII.

Not only were German soldiers en masse better trained and equipped than Allied soldiers (especially Soviet conscript pawns), but their tanks were awesome. A standard German medium tank like a Pz IV was worth 4 T-34/76s or Shermans - it was hand-crafted, armed with a 75mm PaK gun that despite being about the same size as its competitors' 76mm cannons, was deadlier.

German tanks were also differentiated, unlike most Allied equipment - for instance a Pz III could be outfitted with a flamethrower rather than its cannon and would be referred to as a Flammenpanzer. Same applied for Sd Kfz 251 halftracks. Add in the tank destroyers Elefant and Hummel, and the German Army is rolling even before the inception of the Konigstiger.

Point is, the Soviet Army was a load of crap which benefited from German logistical inferiority as well as the weather.

Throughout most of Russia's history are ironic "victories" in which they performed very poorly but managed to win politically through waiting for winter and attacking enemy supply lines etc.

China is even more extreme in that than Russia though. China can lose 3 million soldiers in a single battle and still call it a glorious victory.
