My granddad was 20 and was in the war on the western front although not actual d-day. He said his squad (or whatever the proper military name is) fought in a village in Belgium and all the civilians ran away because the fighting, eventually the germans got away because they couldn't surround it and the village was empty so they went through people's houses stealing jewelry, when the civilians got back they saw all their stuff was gone and they said the Germans stole it.

We were fighting for Saipan on D-day I think
We didn't get liberated for another half year or so I believe. And the Germans started all kinds of punitive sanctions here.
D-Day was on 6 June 1944. But our liberation was on 5 May 1945.
In the meantime we were having a fun little famine. Because the Germans were blocking our food transport after the failed operation market garden.
> A German blockade cut off food and fuel shipments from farm areas. Some 4.5 million were affected and survived because of soup kitchens. As many as 22,000 may have died because of the famine
