I remember it too. You know, a ton of godawful sitcoms become popular. When I sat down and thought about why this one didn't, I decided that it was because the central point of humor was that they were sensitive to being stereotyped, and that viewers were uncomfortable with the transition from a 30 second joke where you could just laugh at their misfortune to a TV series where they were actual characters that you were supposed to empathize with.
