The Dutch may not have many great writers, but their visual arts legacy punches well above their weight. Even in absolute terms, and not per capita, they dwarf the American legacy, and possibly even the anglo empire altogether.

There's a reason why they're called the home of the "Renaissance of the North". Rembrandt is one of the greatest artists of all time, van Gogh is one of the most popular, and don't forget Vermeer, Hals and so many of the 15th century painters that reshaped European art (ex. Van Eyck, Hieronymus Bosch), only second to the artists of Firenze.

no there actually aren't many things worth reading. and I'm saying this as a person who reads a lot. like the american user said, Spinoza is one. Erasmus is also a fairly famous one (although he wrote in Latin), his work 'Lof Der Zotheid' or 'Praise Of Folly' is a hilarious work of satire. Vondel is nice too.
